THE LOWDOWN

SEVILLA

It has been another miserable campaign for Sevilla as they face another battle against relegation, much like last season – albeit they eventually won another UEFA Europa League title. The Andalusians are onto their third permanent manager of the campaign with both Jose Luis Mendilibar and Diego Alonso already being moved on.

Former Watford and Getafe boss Quique Sanchez Flores is tasked with making Sevilla a more organised and difficult team to beat this season but, most importantly, simply more effective. They have managed just six victories in 27 matches across all competitions with three of those wins against lower league opposition in the Copa del Rey.

ALAVES

Following promotion to La Liga last season, Deportivo Alaves enjoyed a relatively impressive first-half of the season with pre-season expectations of success being to simply avoid relegation. The Basque club have suffered ten defeats in 19 matches but an aggressive style of football has helped to produce four victories thus far.

Under the management of Luis Garcia Plata, Alaves come into this one on the back of a slender 1-0 defeat of Real Betis in the Round of 32 of the Copa del Rey in their most recent outing, last weekend. They are winless in their last five matches in Spain’s top-flight, though, as they sit just a couple of points above the bottom three and the relegation places.

THE PREDICTION

This really is a relegation six pointer. Things are surely going to get better for Sevilla this season as they move onto their third manager of the campaign but their 2-0 defeat at home to Athletic and scrappy victory over Racing Ferrol would appear to suggest it could well be more of the same. Alaves will know that if they can frustrate the hosts, the crowd will let Sevilla know of their unrest. As a result, due to Sevilla’s lack of form and Alaves’ likely game plan, a low-scoring affair is to be expected.
