THE LOWDOWN

REAL BETIS

Manuel Pellegrini’s Real Betis have, like a lot of Spanish sides, had to deal with the financial constraints and restrictions placed upon clubs in La Liga. The Andalusians have had to act smartly in the summer transfer window and that does mean, when they have an injury crisis like they do, they are really limited in terms of personnel.

Betis came away from their regional rivals Granada with a 1-1 draw but that has continued a difficult run of form for the former West Ham United, Manchester City, Malaga and Real Madrid manager. They have managed just one win in their last six matches across all competitions as they sit in the middle-of-the-table.

VALENCIA

Off-field protests continue at Valencia with supporters still unhappy with the ownership of Peter Lim. They managed to narrowly escape relegation on the final day of the campaign last year but do look set for another long slog against finishing in the bottom three this time around. Ruben Baraja, who kept Valencia up, has remained in charge for the 2023/24 La Liga campaign.

The visitors have started this season with three victories, a draw and three defeats in their opening seven matches. They did begin with back-to-back victories, though, so results have regressed and their only win in their last five games was a frankly bizarre and unusually excellent performance against Atletco Madrid with a 3-0 win at Mestalla.

THE TEAM NEWS

REAL BETIS

Manuel Pellegrini, as mentioned, is dealing with something of an injury crisis at the Benito Villamarin as Marc Bartra has joined the likes of Willian Jose on the sidelines.

PREDICTED XI (4-2-3-1): Bravo; Ruibal, Pezzella, Riad, Abner; Rodriguez, Guardado; Diao, Isco, Abde Ez; Perez

UNAVAILABLE: Bartra (Injured), Willian Jose (Injured), Luiz Henrique (Injured), Sabaly (Injured), Fekir (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE:

VALENCIA

Ruben Baraja will be without Selim Amallah who is out due to a suspension and they are also without injured duo Dimitri Foulquier and Sergi Canos.

PREDICTED XI (4-2-3-1): Mamardashvili; Correia, Diakhaby, Ozkacar, Gaya; Pepelu, Guerra; Perez, Amallah, Lopez; Duro

UNAVAILABLE: Amallah (Suspended), Foulquier (Injured), Canos (Injured), Mari (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE: Vazquez (Injured)

THE PREDICTION

These are two of Spain’s biggest clubs but both teams, despite actually sitting in the top-half of the table, will be a little concerned about being dragged into something murky down at the bottom end. Real Betis have the upcoming distraction of UEFA Europa League football and already have a small squad with injury issues, whilst Valencia will value a point in Andalusia as a good one. Given that, in the heat of Seville, we are unlikely to see an overly entertaining or intense encounter.
