THE LOWDOWN

RAYO VALLECANO

At the start of this season, Rayo Vallecano were tipped up for relegation as off-field issues combined with the departure of Andoni Iraola as well as several key players. Francisco, though, got a grip of Rayo early on but performances were always unconvincing and he was eventually sacked in January with Iraola’s former assistant, 33-year-old Inigo Perez, being appointed.

Since Inigo Perez’ appointment, Rayo’s performances have once again but they have slipped further towards the bottom three and the relegation places. Their goalless draw against fellow strugglers Celta Vigo at Balaidos a couple of weeks ago means that they have suffered just one loss in their last four matches.

GETAFE

Former manager Quique Sanchez Flores returned to Getafe towards the end of last season and he has once again got his capital city club punching above their weight as they challenge for a top seven finish and potential UEFA Europa Conference League qualification. They begin the match day sitting six points outside of those places.

The visitors come into this one on the back of some really underwhelming form, though. Their most recent outing saw them edged out by a goal to nil at the Coliseum by Sevilla with a fifth minute winning goal from Sergio Ramos. That means they have now managed just one victory in their last six matches.

THE PREDICTION

It is a Madrid derby between these two this weekend as both sides strive for points to make the run in either a little easier or more interesting. Rayo would just like to ease any headaches with regards to relegation, whilst Getafe are still aiming to break back into the top seven. Rayo have returned to their more intense style of football that Iraola implemented, whilst Getafe have been a lot better to watch than usually this season. As a result, we could have quite an entertaining encounter at Vallecas.
