THE LOWDOWN

OSASUNA

After reaching the final of the Copa del Rey and also finishing seventh in La Liga, subsequently qualifying for the UEFA Europa Conference League, it was always going to take something a bit special to keep optimism and feeling as high in Pamplona. Osasuna have slightly regressed so far this season but remain a typically difficult to beat side.

Jago Arrasate’s side were hammered 4-0 at the Bernabeu by Real Madrid a couple of weeks ago. They have managed just one win in their last seven matches across all competitions, which included being knocked out in the playoff round of the UEFA Europa Conference League. They begin this weekend’s round of fixtures sitting in the bottom-half of the table.

GRANADA

Granada, mid-way through last season, were struggling following La Liga relegation in 2022. Aitor Karanka was replaced by Paco Lopez and the latter led the Andalusians to an impressive automatic promotion back to the top-flight as Segunda champions. They came into this season expecting to struggle against the drop, though.

The visitors come into this on the back of an entertaining 2-2 draw with Barcelona in their most recent outing, a couple of weeks ago, before the October international break. Paco Lopez, famed for an attacking and easy on the eye style of football, have now had three successive score draws but one win in nine matches leaves them sitting in the bottom three and the relegation places.

THE TEAM NEWS

GRANADA

Paco Lopez will be able to name an unchanged eleven for this weekend’s encounter with just Victor Diaz and Raul Fernandez out injured for their trip north.

THE PREDICTION

Both of these sides enjoyed impressive seasons last year, relative to where they were at. Osasuna have built their relative success on an impressive but perhaps slightly defensive style of football, albeit that has come loose this season with a lot more intensity in their matches. Given Granada’s record and general intent to play football in a proactive manner, they will head north and take the game to the hosts. An entertaining Friday evening clash could well be in store in the region of Navarre.
