THE LOWDOWN

Osasuna

After reaching the final of the Copa del Rey but losing to Real Madrid in Sevilla a few weeks ago, it could well have been easy for Osasuna to drift away from the top seven and fizzle out at the end of the season. However, under the impressive management of Jagoba Arrasate, the Pamplona club begin this final round of the Liga season sitting seventh in the table and closing in on UEFA Europa Conference League qualification.

The Pamplona club could have pretty much sealed their spot in European competition next season but they were beaten 2-1 by relegation battling Getafe last weekend, thanks to a second-half stoppage-time winner and first goal of the season from Jaime Mata.

Osasuna, though, have had an extremely impressive campaign, regardless of what happens on this final day of the season. The fact they are so close to securing a spot in Europe for the first time in over 15 years will already be viewed as relatively successful.

Girona

Last season, Girona were promoted back into the top-flight of Spanish football via the Segunda playoffs. The Catalans have performed extremely well as they compete for a top seven finish and potential UEFA Europa Conference League qualification, under the management of Michel. Finishing seventh would result in Girona’s first ever season in European competition and they have been overperforming whilst playing an entertaining style of football.

Ahead of the final round of La Liga fixtures, Girona begin the weekend sitting a point behind Osasuna in the table and may think they have blown their opportunity with no wins in their last four matches. Their most recent outing was a 2-1 defeat at home to sixth-place Real Betis, in which they did lead by a goal to nil at half-time.

Girona have been very entertaining, as mentioned, with 110 goals coming in their 37 matches this season. Only the top three teams, Atletico Madrid, Real Madrid and Barcelona, have scored more than Girona, whilst only four sides, Almeria and the bottom three Real Valladolid, Espanyol and Elche, have conceded more often.

THE PREDICTION

This could be a really entertaining encounter in Pamplona as both sides seek to ram home their overperformance and over achievement throughout the campaign with confirming UEFA Europa Conference League qualification. Jagoba Arrasate's Osasuna have enjoyed a memorable 2022/23 campaign by reaching the cup final and heading into the final day of the season sitting seventh in the table. Girona, following promotion last season, are seeking a first ever European qualification with Michel guiding them to an impressive campaign. Both sides will see this as a bonus but still major opportunity and we could be in for a topsy-turvy 'playoff' cracker at El Sadar, given the likelihood of Athletic losing at Real Madrid.
