THE LOWDOWN

MALLORCA

Mexican coach Javier Aguirre has done an excellent job at Real Mallorca after finishing in the top-half of La Liga last season and they will be very proud of their efforts this season but generally quite gutted after they suffered a penalty shootout defeat to Athletic Club at La Cartuja in Sevilla last weekend in the final of the Copa del Rey.

In La Liga, the hosts are not entirely safe of finishing in the bottom three and the relegation places as they begin the match day sitting six points clear of the drop with eight games to go. They have, though, suffered just one defeat in their last seven matches inside 90 minutes across all competitions.

REAL MADRID

The issue for this one for Real Madrid is simply the timing of it as they travel to the Balearic Islands in the middle of their UEFA Champions League quarter-final tie against Manchester City. Los Blancos shared a thrilling 3-3 draw with the defending champions at the Bernabeu on Tuesday and travel to east Manchester this coming Wednesday.

In 43 matches across all competitions so far this season, Real Madrid have suffered just two defeats and both of those losses have come against Atletico Madrid at the Metropolitano. They begin this weekend’s round of fixtures sitting eight points clear of Clasico rivals Barcelona at the top-of-the-table.

THE TEAM NEWS

MALLORCA

Real Mallorca have two key first-team injury issues for this weekend’s visit of Spain’s champions-elect as Toni Lato and Dani Rodriguez are both unavailable.

REAL MADRID

Carlo Ancelotti has had a long injury list throughout the campaign but he is currently only without goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois and defender David Alaba.

PREDICTED XI (4-1-2-1-2): Lunin; Vazquez, Tchouameni, Rudiger, Mendy; Kroos; Modric, Camavinga; Brahim Diaz; Vinicius Junior, Joselu

UNAVAILABLE: Courtois (Injured), Alaba (Injured)

THE PREDICTION

Javier Aguirre is known for being an excellent motivator with his primarily defensive tactics also being extremely effective in making Mallorca a very tough team to beat. They welcome the 14-time European champions Madrid to the Balearics this weekend with Carlo Ancelotti probably tempted to make some changes. Madrid are favourites but could lack fluency as a result, whilst Mallorca will be keen to keep it as tight as possible for as long as possible.

TIP: REAL MADRID TO WIN & UNDER 3.5 GOALS
