THE LOWDOWN

Mallorca

Prior to the 2021/22 run-in, Real Mallorca appointed Javier Aguirre and the experienced Mexican coach guided the Balearic Islanders to a safe position, following their promotion back to the top-flight in 2021. Aguirre has, once again, guided Mallorca to a respectable and comfortable position in the middle-of-the-table. In fact, they are in a bit of a no mans land with the six teams below them in the relegation battle and the five above competing for European qualification.

The islanders come into this on the back of emotional match for Barcelona at Camp Nou in their most recent outing, last weekend. Mallorca were hammered 3-0 by the Catalans with Ansu Fati notching a brace and Gavi scoring late on. Amath Ndiaye was sent off inside 15 minutes as Camp Nou said goodbye to Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba as well as the ground itself for at least a season.

Their last four matches have featured one of the two sides keeping a clean sheet and that is a theme reflected in their own scoring habits throughout the campaign. For example, they have notched just 34 goals this season, which is the fourth lowest amount of any team in La Liga this season.

Rayo Vallecano

Following promotion via the Segunda playoffs in the summer of 2021, Rayo Vallecano have performed magnificently well and above expectations, finishing comfortably in mid-table last season and heading into the final day of this season in top seven contention with potential UEFA Europa Conference League qualification on the line. Despite that, there could be another summer of upheaval at a club that is widely regarded as badly run behind the scenes.

Former Athletic Club defender Andoni Iraola has been the mastermind behind Rayo’s rise. However, after interest from the Premier League such as Leeds United last season, the impressive manager seems set to depart Vallecas for a crack at a job elsewhere. Alongside him, the likes of Catena and Santi Comesana could also depart the Madrid-based club.

Their most recent outing was a 2-1 win at home to Villarreal, last weekend. Raul de Tomas and Isi Palazon scored second-half goals with Giovani Lo Celso scoring late on but Rayo managed to hold on for victory to keep themselves in the hunt for a top seven finish.

THE PREDICTION

Both of these sides will be pleased with how the 2022/23 season has gone. The two clubs would view survival as a success so to head into the final day of the campaign in such a content position will be very pleasing. Due to the head-to-head rule being La Liga's first tiebreaker, Mallorca cannot finish in the top seven but they have been excellent, whilst Rayo can indeed finish in the European spots in what is likely to be Iraola's final game. Rayo are a progressive and front foot side but they haven't necessarily been prolific, whilst any sort of low-scoring encounter is the goal for Mallorca. So, given that, under 2.5 goals seems likely for this final day clash in Palma.

TIP: UNDER 2.5 GOALS
