THE LOWDOWN
MALLORCA
Javier Aguirre remains in charge of Real Mallorca just about as we begin 2024 but the Balearic Islanders will be wanting to really steady themselves this season. The sale of Lee Kang-in to Paris Saint-Germain in the summer didn’t help but they have definitely gone backwards this year as they battle against relegation.
The home team come into this one on the back of a slender 1-0 defeat to Real Madrid at the Bernabeu a couple of weeks ago before they comfortably defeated Burgos by three goals to nil in the cup last weekend. That slender loss to Los Blancos is their only defeat in their last eight matches across all competitions.
CELTA VIGO
Coached by former Liverpool and Real Madrid boss Rafa Benitez, Celta Vigo begin this weekend’s round of fixtures firmly in the relegation battle in La Liga, consistently underperforming throughout the campaign. Their performances, as has often been the case, haven’t actually been as poor as their results would suggest.
The visitors begin the 20th match day of the 2023/24 campaign sitting just a point and a place outside of the bottom three and the relegation places. The Galicians’ 4-2 defeat of Amorebieta in the Round of 32 of the Copa del Rey last weekend means they have suffered just one loss in their last eight matches.

THE PREDICTION
This is a huge game down at the bottom end of the table between two teams that would have expected a mid-table finish but have both underperformed – and yet they are beginning this year in much-improved form. The two teams are in improved form but have still combined for just 37 goals so far this season. So, with both defences in good shape, a fairly frustrating watch for the neutral is to be expected in this one.
