THE LOWDOWN
LAS PALMAS
Following promotion last season, it has been a genuinely very impressive campaign for Las Palmas as the island side, dubbed ‘the Brazilians of Spanish football’ attempt to earn a top-half finish this season, under the management of former Barcelona youth coach, Garcia Pimienta, playing a controlling, possession-based style of football.
The Canary Islanders remain in the top-half ahead of this weekend’s round of fixtures but they do come into this one on the back of back-to-back defeats either side of the New Year. They were beaten 2-1 by Barcelona a couple of weeks ago before then losing the Canarian derby to Tenerife in the Copa del Rey last weekend.
VILLARREAL
It has been a horrible campaign for Villarreal this season and, after half of the campaign, it wouldn’t be daft to suggest that the Yellow Submarine are genuinely involved in this season’s La Liga relegation battle. They are already onto their third manager of the campaign and things aren’t necessarily improving.
Marcelino was appointed during the November international break, replacing Pacheta who had already replaced Quique Setien this season, and they come into this one on the back of a penalty shootout defeat to Unionistas in the Round of 32 of the Copa del Rey, last weekend, continuing their remarkably poor campaign.
THE TEAM NEWS
LAS PALMAS
Former Ajax midfielder Daley Sinkgraven is out suspended with Fabio Gonzalez out injured. Munir and Marvin Park are both injury doubts, too.
PREDICTED XI (4-3-3): Valles; Suarez, Coco, Marmol, Cardona; Munoz, Perrone, Rodriguez; Munir, Sandro, Moleiro
UNAVAILABLE: Sinkgraven (Suspended), Fabio Gonzalez (Injured)
QUESTIONABLE: Park (Injured), Munir (Injured)
VILLARREAL
Villarreal are without key man Aissa Mandi due to his callup to the Moroccan national team with Raul Albiol and Juan Foyth among those sidelined due to injury.
PREDICTED XI (4-3-3): Jorgensen; Altimira, Albiol, Cuenca, Moreno; Parejo, Capoue, Terrats; Akhomach, Gerard, Morales
UNAVAILABLE: Mandi (International Duty), Albiol (Injured), Foyth (Injured), Pino (Injured)
QUESTIONABLE: Bailly (Injured), Sorloth (Injured), Suarez (Injured)
THE PREDICTION
Ahead of this season, not many would have expected to be in a scenario at the half-way stage where Las Palmas are looking to boost their chances of achieving a top seven finish and European qualification, whilst Villarreal steady the ship and attempt to steer away from the bottom three and the relegation places. Villarreal have managed just two wins in their last eight matches across all competitions so Las Palmas will be confident of having it their way and having it their way will involve a lot of control and a low-scoring encounter.
