THE LOWDOWN

GRANADA

Following promotion as Segunda Division champions last season, Granada begin the 16th match day of the 2023/24 La Liga season sitting firmly in the bottom three and the relegation places. Under the management of Paco Lopez, the Andalusians have managed just one victory in their 15 matches so far this season.

The home team do come into this one on the back of a 2-0 loss away at the Bernabeu against a Real Madrid side that have found it worryingly easy to concede to anyone in La Liga so far this season. Granada’s only win of the season came all the way back in mid-August when they defeated fellow strugglers, Real Mallorca.

ATHLETIC BILBAO

Coached by former Barcelona boss, Ernesto Valverde, Athletic Club are enjoying an impressive season so far as they challenge for a top four spot and potential UEFA Champions League qualification. The Basque club begin this weekend sitting just three points behind Atletico Madrid in fourth place.

The visitors earned a comfortable 3-0 victory over Cayon in the second round of the Copa del Rey during the week. That means they have now enjoyed a seven-match unbeaten run of form across all competitions with five victories coming in those seven games, including three wins in their last four La Liga matches.

THE TEAM NEWS

GRANADA

Granada have a few injury concerns for this weekend’s visit of high-flying Athletic Club with Jesus Vallejo the biggest issue.

PREDICTED XI (4-4-2): Fernandez; Sanchez, Miquel, Torrente, Neva; Manafa, Ruiz, Gerard Gumbau, Zaragoza; Uzuni, Boye

UNAVAILABLE: Raul Fernandez (Injured), Vallejo (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE: Rubio (Injured)

ATHLETIC BILBAO

Athletic Club will be without the injured Dani Garcia whilst the visitors’ defender, Yeray Alvarez, is a doubt for this weekend.

PREDICTED XI (4-2-3-1): Simon; de Marcos, Vivian, Paredes, Lekue; Ruiz de Galarreta, Vesga; I.Williams, Sancet, N.Williams; Guruzeta

UNAVAILABLE: Garcia (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE: Yeray (Injured)

THE PREDICTION

Even with their home advantage, this one appears to be a fairly uneven and one-sided contest on paper with Granada in such underwhelming form. Alexander Medina replaced Paco Lopez over the November international break but performances and results have not improved. They now face an Athletic side that are in some excellent form with a fabulously fluent and fluid front four so an away win is the way to go for this one.

BETTING TIP: ATHLETIC TO WIN
