THE LOWDOWN

GIRONA

Coached by Michel, Girona have been exceptional so far this season. They gained promotion in 2022 and were one of the most entertaining teams in La Liga last year, establishing themselves in mid-table. Now, though, the Catalans are very much involved in La Liga’s title race with 14-time European champions, Real Madrid.

However, the City Football Group owned club were held to an extremely frustrating goalless draw away to Almeria in their most recent outing, last weekend. Almeria are the only winless team in Europe’s six biggest leagues. They did recover from that by comfortably defeating Rayo Vallecano in the Copa del Rey in midweek.

SEVILLA

It has been an absolutely miserable for Sevilla this season but they have at least found some solace in a run into the quarter-finals of the Copa del Rey. The Andalusians come into this one on the back of an impressive 3-1 defeat of Getafe at the Coliseum with a brace from youngster Isaac Romero Bernal in that game.

However, Quique Sanchez Flores’, who is their third permanent manager of the 2023/24 campaign, side are in serious danger of dropping down into the bottom three and the relegation places. Sevilla were beaten 3-2 by Alaves at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan last weekend and they begin the weekend sitting just a point and a place above 18th placed Cadiz.

THE TEAM NEWS

GIRONA

Long-term injury absentees Joel Roca Casals and Ricard Artero remain unavailable and they have been joined on the sidelines by suspended midfielder, Aleix Garcia.

PREDICTED XI (4-4-1-1): Gazzaniga; Martinez, Juanpe, Blind, Gutierrez; Couto, Martin, Tsygankov, Savio; Torre; Dovbyk

UNAVAILABLE: Garcia (Suspended), Lopez (Suspended), Casals (Injured), Artero (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE: Villa (Injured)

SEVILLA

Youssef En-Nesyri is away with the Moroccans at the Africa Cup of Nations, whilst Boubakary Soumare is unavailable due to suspension for this weekend, too.

PREDICTED XI (4-4-2): Dmitrovic; Navas, Ramos, Marcao, Pedrosa; Suso, Sow, Rakitic, Oliver; Ocampos, Romero Bernal

UNAVAILABLE: En-Nesyri (International duty), Soumare (Suspended), Gudelj (Injured), Salas (Injured), Lukebakio (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE: Sow (Injured), Acuna (Injured), Lamela (Injured), Nyland (Injured)

THE PREDICTION

This is a really intriguing one to see whether or not Michel’s Girona can bounce back. The likes of Savio and Viktor Tsygankov should come back into their La Liga starting line-up and the Catalans will aim to take the game to a Sevilla side that are very much in a relegation battle. Take away the names and reputations of the clubs and we have the league leaders, at the start of the match day, hosting a team that can slip into the bottom three this weekend. This one really should be a home win and it could well be another entertaining home win, given Sevilla’s attempt to be a little more proactive in recent weeks and Girona’s remarkable record.

TIP: GIRONA TO WIN & OVER 2.5 GOALS
