THE LOWDOWN

GIRONA

Following promotion back to La Liga in 2022, Girona were an excellent performer in Spain’s top-flight last season, finishing firmly in mid-table and only narrowly missing out on a top seven finish. Under the management of Michel, they also did this in quite an impressive and entertaining manner with only five teams scoring more than them and only four conceding more.

Despite the loss of key players such as Oriol Romeu and Valentin Castellanos over the summer, Girona have started the 2023/24 La Liga season in impressive form. The Catalans opened the campaign by snatching a 1-1 draw away to Real Sociedad before demolishing Getafe by three to nil and then pulling off a surprise by inflicting further pain on pointless Sevilla last weekend with a 2-1 victory in Andalusia.

LAS PALMAS

Under the management of Garcia Pimienta, Las Palmas gained promotion to the top-flight last season playing a genuinely stereotypical style of football for Canary Islanders. Known as ‘the Brazilians of Spanish football’, Pimienta’s history as a Barcelona youth coach shone through in style but also substance as they gained automatic promotion.

Las Palmas have begun the campaign in relatively awkward and frustrating, low-scoring form, though. On the opening day of the season they shared a 1-1 draw with Real Mallorca after taking a lead via a Jonathan Viera penalty then, though, they were beaten 1-0 by Valencia through a Pepelu penalty. Last weekend they shared a goalless draw at home to Real Sociedad meaning they are yet to score from open play this season and two of the three goals that have been scored in their matches have come from the penalty spot.

THE TEAM NEWS

GIRONA

Despite Michel having to cope with several injuries, Girona are expected to name an unchanged side or at least as close to an unchanged eleven for this weekend.

LAS PALMAS

Garcia Pimienta is having to deal with several injuries and new re-signing Marvin Park is out, as well as Daley Sinkgraven and Alberto Moleiro, who would all likely start for the Canary Islanders.

PREDICTED XI (4-3-3): Valles; Araujo, Suarez, Marmol, Cardona; Loiodice, Rodriguez, Viera; Munir, Kaba, Sandro

UNAVAILABLE: Sinkgraven (Injured), Park (Injured), Moleiro (Injured), Gonzalez (Injured)

THE PREDICTION

These are two sides that have been recently promoted to the top-flight and are going against the grain of Spanish football at the moment. With the rise of ‘Cholismo’ at Atletico and Bordalas’ Getafe, most sides have preferred to adopt a reactive and defensive style of football but these two seek to attack their opposition and play with a more ideologically free style. Girona are the favourites for this one, especially in Catalonia, but it could be an entertaining match, albeit Las Palmas’ games have lacked much excitement so far.

TIP: GIRONA TO WIN
