THE LOWDOWN

GIRONA

Michel went into the March international break critical of his players. Girona have been one of the stories of the season across Europe but in the last couple of months they have drifted out of the title race but instead of trying to push for a historic finish and still earn UEFA Champions League qualification, they have really taken their eye off the ball.

The Catalans took the lead in the capital city last weekend against Atletico Madrid via Artem Dovbyk but they eventually fell to a 3-1 loss against Los Rojiblancos with a brace from Antoine Griezmann and a goal from Alvaro Morata. That means Girona begin the weekend with their lead over fifth place down to eight points with seven games to go.

CADIZ

Under the management of former Southampton boss Mauricio Pellegrino, Cadiz begin this weekend’s round of fixtures sitting just inside the bottom three and the relegation places but the Andalusians have just seven games left of the 2023/24 La Liga campaign but they have been much-improved of late.

Despite that improvement, the visitors do come into this one on the back of a slender 1-0 loss to Barcelona in their most recent outing last weekend with Joao Felix scoring a 37th minute winning goal. Prior to that loss, Cadiz had suffered just one defeat in their previous five matches as they battle against the drop.

THE TEAM NEWS

Girona have a few injury concerns for this weekend’s visit of Cadiz. Both Ricard Artero and Viktor Tsygankov are doubtful, whilst Joel Roca Casals is out injured.

CADIZ

THE PREDICTION

Girona’s 3-1 defeat to Atletico Madrid means that they have now managed just four victories in their last 11 matches across all competitions since the end of January. That stuttering has coincided with rumours that the likes of Aleix Garcia, Savio, Artem Dovbyk and Michel will all be departing the club in the summer. They do now, though, face a Cadiz side that are destined for second-tier football and Girona really should get back on track with a victory in this one, especially with their home advantage.
