THE LOWDOWN

GETAFE

Throughout the majority of last season, Getafe were in the relegation battle and even the bottom three for much of it but they managed to survive on the final day of the season after eventually switching back to their former boss Jose Bordalas. Bordalas’ football is attritional and aggressive in the extreme and whilst it can provide some form of entertainment due to its sheer ridiculousness, it is rarely pleasant to watch.

That was shown by their opening day draw with reigning champions Barcelona at the Coliseum last weekend. The Madrid club shared a goalless draw with Barca in a game whereby there were two red cards and 26 minutes of stoppage time combined. They followed that up with a similarly blunt attacking performance last weekend but were put to the sword by Girona, who hammered them by three goals to nil.

ALAVES

Following promotion last season, Alaves will be simply expecting to avoid relegation this season, playing a rough and rugged style of football under the management of Luis Garcia Plaza. They gained promotion via the playoffs last season and have spent a little bit of money, especially in relative terms to the rest of La Liga.

The Basque club have started the 2023/24 campaign with a 1-0 defeat to Cadiz, followed by a thrilling and surprising 4-3 win over last season’s UEFA Europa League winners Sevilla at Mendizorozza last Monday. Luis Rioja, Ruben Duarte and a second-half brace from Kike Garcia gave Alaves a relatively comfortable win with Erik Lamela scoring a late consolation to make it 4-3.

THE PREDICTION

Don’t be fooled by Alaves’ bizarre and chaotic 4-3 victory over Sevilla last weekend. A one-goal game, such as their opening day encounter against Cadiz, is more their style and the Basque side will head to the capital expecting a game of very little fun for the neutral. Getafe conceded three last weekend but back at the Coliseum will expect to be a bit tighter in a game which promises to be, pardon the exasperation, incredibly tedious. Under 2.5 goals seems inevitable but football never fails to surprise.

TIP: UNDER 2.5 GOALS
