THE LOWDOWN

Celta Vigo

Since the mid-season appointment of Carlos Carvalhal, replacing Eduardo Coudet, Celta Vigo have been much-improved as the 2022/23 La Liga campaign has gone on. The Galicians have endured a really difficult run of form, though, with four successive defeats meaning they have now managed to collect just five points in their last nine matches.

Celta went to the Basque country at the weekend and they were beaten 2-1 by Ernesto Valverde’s European chasing Athletic Club. Inaki Williams gave them an early lead before Celta equalised shortly after half-time but Alex Berenguer, in the 54th minute, notched the decisive goal.

Celta and Carvalhal are now under pressure. They begin this weekend’s round of fixtures sitting four points and a few places outside of the bottom three and the relegation places after their difficult run of form.

Girona

Following promotion from the Segunda last season, Girona have enjoyed an impressive campaign as they begin this weekend’s round of fixtures sitting in the top-half of the table as they chase a top seven finish and potential UEFA Europa Conference League qualification.

Under the management of Michel, the Catalans have been one of, if not the, most entertaining sides in La Liga this season. Their 35 matches have produced 105 goals so far with just the top three having scored more than them and only four teams have conceded more often.

The visitors’ most recent outing was a 2-1 defeat at home to Villarreal who, just about, are trying to aim for a top four finish themselves. It means that four of Girona’s last five matches have featured both teams scoring.

THE PREDICTION

When Carlos Carvalhal was appointed as manager of Celta Vigo, the former Swansea, Sheffield Wednesday and Braga manager immediately improved performances and results playing a more enterprising style of football. He became renowned for trying to implement a 'formation-less' system at Braga. The Galicians will be desperate for victory at Balaidos as they face the league's entertainers, Girona, who are also seeking points to ensure their first ever season in European football. This could well be quite an entertaining encounter with both teams scoring seeming likely.

TIP: BOTH TEAMS TO SCORE
