THE LOWDOWN
CADIZ
Under the management of Sergio, who is co-managing the Andalusians with the Catalonia football team, Cadiz managed to avoid La Liga relegation relatively comfortably in the end by finishing 14th. Despite finishing on what would usually be an impressive 42 points, they finished just two points above the bottom three and the relegation places, highlighting the competitive of Spain’s top-flight last season.
The home team, over the summer, have lost some key players such as Theo Bongonda, who has joined Spartak Moscow for an undisclosed fee, as well as Alfonso Espino, who has signed on a free transfer for Rayo Vallecano. Choco Lozano has also departed the club, signing for other bottom-half rivals Getafe.
ALAVES
Deportivo Alaves gained promotion to the top-flight via the Segunda playoffs in the summer of 2023. The Basque club, under the management of former Real Mallorca and Villarreal manager Luis Garcia, Alaves played a relatively agricultural style of football, which is quite similar to how they played when they were relative stalwarts in La Liga.
The visitors’ pre-season has consisted of five matches with two defeats against Burgos and Valencia. They have won three games, though, against Racing Santander, Tenerife and Osasuna. In the summer transfer window, they have allowed Florian Lejeune to join Rayo Vallecano on a permanent basis, whilst Jason and Toni Moya have also left on free transfers.
THE TEAM NEWS
CADIZ
Sergio, as is the case throughout the Iberian peninsula in terms of coaching and coaches, prefers a narrow 4-4-2 system with an emphasis on defensive and reactive football. They are without key forward Sergi Guardiola and full-back Javi Hernandez due to respective injuries.
PREDICTED XI (4-4-2): Ledesma; Zaldua, Mere, Chust, Pires; Alejo, Mari, Escalante, Machis; Marti, Ramos
UNAVAILABLE: Guardiola (Injured), Hernandez (Injured), Cala (Injured), Ocampo (Injured)
QUESTIONABLE:
ALAVES
Luis Garcia Plata has a preferred formation of 4-2-3-1 and that could suit new signing Antonio Blanco, who has arrived from Real Madrid’s Castilla. Giuliano Simeone, though, is another signing who will be without for the foreseeable future after a horrific leg break in pre-season against Burgos.
PREDICTED XI (4-2-3-1): Sivera; Sedlar, Maras, Abqar, Duarte; Blanco, Guevara; Alkain, Guridi, Rioja; de la Fuente
UNAVAILABLE: Simeone (Injured)

THE PREDICTION
Over the last decade or so, Spanish football has reacted to the dominance of ‘tiki-taka’ in the late-2000s and early-2010s by several teams deploying quite aggressive and robust tactical philosophies which has seen the goal scoring average per game lowered significantly. Given both of these sides fall into that category and both sides, albeit with a lot of competitiveness, are expected to battle against relegation, a low-scoring encounter with under 2.5 goals seems almost inevitable for this one.
TIP: UNDER 2.5 GOALS
