THE LOWDOWN
BARCELONA
With some defensive solidity, Barcelona reclaimed Spain’s league title last season in a fairly comfortable manner. Despite that, pressure was on Xavi this season for a much-needed improvement in the UEFA Champions League and also in general performance levels as what had been produced was viewed as not good enough to sustain for two successive seasons.
Frustrations grew after an opening day goalless draw with Getafe but back-to-back 5-0 victories against Real Betis and Royal Antwerp will have given many reason to be extremely positive after the international break. Barca came from 2-0 down to defeat Celta with ten minutes go last weekend but were then held to a 2-2 draw in the Balearic Islands against Real Mallorca.
SEVILLA
Throughout much of last season, Sevilla found themselves in La Liga’s very competitive relegation battle. The Andalusians eventually avoided the drop with Jose Luis Mendilibar’s late-March appointment sparking a revival which also saw them defeat both Manchester United and Juventus en route to winning yet another UEFA Europa League in Budapest against Roma.
They began this season, though, with three successive defeats in the league and a penalty shootout loss to Manchester City in the UEFA Super Cup in Piraeus. Concerns were growing ahead of midweek as they looked set for another battle against the drop but they produced a 5-1 hammering of their Andalusian rivals Almeria on Tuesday evening.
THE TEAM NEWS
BARCELONA
Xavi will be without a couple of important midfielders for this weekend’s trip to Sevilla with both Frenkie de Jong and Pedri set to be missing.
PREDICTED XI (4-3-3): ter Stegen; Cancelo, Araujo, Kounde, Balde; Gundogan, Romeu, Gavi; Raphinha, Lewandowski, Felix

SEVILLA
Jose Luis Mendilibar is dealing with several injury issues, especially defensively with the likes of Marcos Acuna, Marcao and Tanguy Nianzou all out injured.
PREDICTED XI (4-2-3-1): Nyland; Navas, Bade, Gudelj, Pedrosa; Sow, Fernando; Suso, Lamela, Lukebakio; En-Nesyri
UNAVAILABLE: Oliver (Injured), Mariano (Injured), Gomez (Injured), Acuna (Injured), Marcao (Injured), Nianzou (Injured), Pastor (Injured)

THE PREDICTION
A few seasons ago this was a legitimate top-of-the-table title clash but, strip away the club names, it is a battle between the reigning champions and a side enduring back-to-back relegation battles. Both teams have important UEFA Champions League matches in midweek so neither will benefit from the other being a little distracted. Sergio Ramos facing Barca will always be a worthwhile spectacle but the home team should still win quite comfortably at the Olympic Stadium.
