THE LOWDOWN
BARCELONA
Xavi announced that he was leaving Barcelona at the end of the season with him suggesting that the team needed a change of dynamic. They were hammered 5-3 by Villarreal on Saturday evening and that means the Blaugrana 19 goals across all competitions in the calendar year of 2024 as they drift further from the title race in La Liga.
This month they have been beaten in the final of the Supercopa de Espana by Real Madrid and also been knocked out in the quarter-finals of the Copa del Rey by Athletic Club. They are 11 points behind their regional rivals, Girona, at the top-of-the-table and no real chance of any silverware this season.
OSASUNA
Under the management of Jago Arrasate, it had been a fairly underwhelming campaign in relative terms for Osasuna after they had been very impressive last year with a seventh-placed finish and being Copa del Rey runners’ up. However, the Pamplona-based club have been much-improved in the last month or so.
The visitors come into this one on the back of a 1-1 draw in their most recent outing away to Sevilla with Ante Budimir cancelling out Isaac Romero’s first-half goal. Osasuna have now suffered just seven defeats in La Liga in a run of form that stretches back to late-November as they attempt to push for a top-half finish.

THE PREDICTION
Even when Barcelona have won this season they have done so in fairly unconvincing fashion. In fact, their only two really impressive La Liga victories have come at home and away against Manuel Pellegrini’s Real Betis. There may well be a release of pressure knowing that Xavi will soon be departing but that will also be a boost for the rest of the league as they try to heap on the misery. Osasuna are in decent form at the moment and have been difficult to beat and they will be confident of scoring at the Olympic Stadium in Barcelona so both teams scoring would seem a good bet.
TIP: BOTH TEAMS TO SCORE
