THE LOWDOWN
BARCELONA
Under the management of Xavi Hernandez, Barcelona won the Spanish title last season but with some underwhelming performances and there was cause for concern with the belief before the season being that they would have to generally improve if they wanted to defend the title, lacking some cohesion and consistency in attack.
The Catalans have been underperforming again for a few months now but they do come into this one on the back of a pivotal 1-0 victory against Atletico Madrid last weekend, in which the Blaugrana performed well. They will still need to work on some fluidity with no wins by more than one goal in their last 14 matches across all competitions.
GIRONA
Coached by Michel, Girona’s rise to being involved in a genuine title race this season has been magnificent, following their promotion to the top-flight in 2022. The Catalans have remained as entertaining as ever, too, with their 5-2 defeat of Orihuela in the second round of the Copa del Rey being a good example of that in midweek.
Their 15 La Liga matches so far this season have consisted of 52 goals with 34 scored and 18 conceded. They have dropped points in just three of their 15 games and could move seven points clear of their regional rivals Barcelona if they were to win this one after coming from behind to defeat Valencia by two goals to one last weekend.
THE TEAM NEWS
BARCELONA
Barcelona have several injury concerns with Marc-Andre ter Stegen, Inigo Martinez, Marcos Alonso and Gavi all unavailable for this weekend.
PREDICTED XI (4-3-3): Pena; Kounde, Araujo, Christensen, Cancelo; de Jong, Gundogan, Pedri; Raphinha, Lewandowski, Joao Felix
UNAVAILABLE: Martinez (Injured), Gavi (Injured), Alonso (Injured), ter Stegen (Injured)
QUESTIONABLE:
GIRONA
Girona are missing a key man for the trip to the Olympic Stadium with midfielder Yangel Herrera missing for this weekend’s clash.
PREDICTED XI (4-4-1-1): Gazzaniga; Martinez, E.Garcia, Blind, Gutierrez; Tsygankov, Torre, A.Garcia, Savio; Martin; Stuani
UNAVAILABLE: Herrera (Injured), Casals (Injured), Villa (Injured)
QUESTIONABLE: Borja Garcia (Injured), Artero (Injured)
THE PREDICTION
Barcelona have badly struggled in front of goal with what appears to be the permanent demise of Robert Lewandowski as a genuinely elite level striker. The home team do, though, remain capable of controlling their opposition. This is a game in which they may well lack control with Artem Dovbyk returning to fitness, too. Girona will be confident of causing major issues for Barcelona and both teams scoring would appear a good bet for what should be a bit of a thriller on Sunday evening.
BETTING TIP: BOTH TEAMS TO SCORE
