THE LOWDOWN
BARCELONA
Reigning champions Barcelona began with a frustrating goalless draw at Getafe in a match that many would describe as the worst of what modern day football in Spain’s top-flight has to offer. Following the sale of Ousmane Dembele to Paris Saint-Germain, the last thing Barca would have wanted would be to lose another winger but the red card shown to Raphinha leaves them a little short on the flanks for this second match.
There were lots of matches last season where Barca were stifled and simply didn’t play well but got over the line with a piece of magic up front or an excellent performance from Marc-Andre ter Stegen. They will hope last week is not just a regression to any sort of mean whereby they can’t keep getting away with winning 1-0.
CADIZ
Cadiz, as ever, are one of the pre-season favourites for the drop. The Andalusians avoided relegation yet again on the final day last season with a respectable total of points above 40, indicative of how competitive and strong the bottom-half of La Liga was last season.
The visitors, under the management of Sergio, are another aggressive and defensively focused side for Xavi’s Barca to try and breakdown. They began their 2023/24 campaign with a typically determined 1-0 victory at home to newly-promoted Alaves with a seventh minute goal from Fede enough to prove to be the difference in the match.
THE TEAM NEWS
BARCELONA
Xavi does have a selection dilemma this weekend because Raphinha has left him short. The Spaniard often played a box midfield with two up front last season and with his abundance of central midfielders, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him try that again.
PREDICTED XI (4-2-3-1): ter Stegen; Araujo, Kounde, Christensen, Balde; Romeu, de Jong; Fati, Pedri, Gundogan; Lewandowski
UNAVAILABLE: Raphinha (Suspended)
QUESTIONABLE:
CADIZ
The visitors also have issues in picking their team after central midfielder Gonzalo Escalante was sent off late in that victory last weekend. It could be argued they are missing almost half of their first eleven with the likes of Victor Chust and Sergi Guardiola also struggling with injuries.
PREDICTED XI (4-4-2): Ledesma; Carcelen, L.Hernandez, Fali, J.Hernandez; Alejo, Fede, Alcaraz, Machis; Ramos, Roger
UNAVAILABLE: Escalante (Suspended), Chust (Injured), Guardiola (Injured), Cala (Injured), Ocampo (Injured)
QUESTIONABLE:
THE PREDICTION
Cadiz will go to Camp Nou and, despite playing a 4-4-2, sit deep and make it extremely difficult for Barcelona to play through. Barca had a lot of trouble in racking up scores last season and it really wouldn’t be a surprise if the Blaugrana laboured in this one either. Whilst the home team are obviously heavy favourites and should win quite comfortably, or at least win it to nil, it is not expected to be an overly enjoyable watch for the neutral with a stodgy Barca side stumbling to an uninspiring three points.
TIP: BARCELONA TO WIN & UNDER 3.5 GOALS
