THE LOWDOWN

ATLETICO MADRID

The style of football at the Metropolitano has evolved into something a little more enterprising but a recent regression, both in terms of performances and results, has left Diego Simeone under a little bit of pressure. They were beaten 1-0 by relegation battling Sevilla at the weekend, leaving them just about clinging on to a place in the top four.

Los Rojiblancos have now suffered a defeat in a quarter of their La Liga matches so far this season and also recently were beaten 1-0 by Athletic Club in the first-leg of their Copa del Rey semi-final tie. With a crucial UEFA Champions League Round of 16 first-leg against Inter coming up, Atletico will want to get through this weekend generally unscathed, both physically and emotionally.

LAS PALMAS

Commonly referred to as ‘the Brazilians of Spanish football’, Las Palmas have enjoyed an extremely impressive 2023/24 La Liga campaign in which their easy on the eye, possession dominant and controlling style of football has them in a position whereby they could well end up qualifying for European competition next season.

The Canary Islanders, who gained promotion to the top-flight last season, come into this one on the back of a 2-0 defeat of rivals for the top seven spots Valencia in Gran Canaria last weekend with late goals from Alex Suarez and Marc Cardona. Managed by former Barcelona youth coach Garcia Pimienta, Las Palmas are two points behind seventh and three off sixth ahead of this weekend.

THE TEAM NEWS

ATLETICO MADRID

There are several injury concerns for Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid this weekend as the likes of Jose Maria Gimenez, Cesar Azpilicueta and Alvaro Morata are unavailable.

QUESTIONABLE:

LAS PALMAS

Aaron Escandell is missing for Las Palmas through suspension this weekend and the visitors are also without Benito Ramirez for this one.

THE PREDICTION

Despite their recent frustration and inconsistency, as well as the fact that they have a tough game against Serie A league leaders Internazionale in the first-leg of their UEFA Champions League Round of 16 tie in midweek, Atletico Madrid will remain as confident as ever of victory at the Metropolitano this weekend – where they remain unbeaten in La Liga so far this season. Las Palmas have made themselves very awkward to play against so whilst Atletico are favourites, a typically low-scoring home win is likely.
