THE LOWDOWN

ATLETICO MADRID

Diego Simeone has been supposedly coming to the end of his Atletico Madrid reign in each of the last few seasons but Los Rojiblancos have a lot to play for in this final month and a half. They edged past Borussia Dortmund by two goals to one at the Metropolitano in midweek in the first-leg of their UEFA Champions League quarter-final tie.

Atletico have been in really indifferent form in La Liga as they compete for a spot in the top four and UEFA Champions League qualification alongside Copa del Rey winners, Athletic Club. Atleti did overcome Villarreal by two goals to one in their most recent outing in the league a couple of weeks ago.

GIRONA

Girona have been absolutely magnificent throughout the campaign and have been one of the stories of the season in European football alongside the likes of Stade Brest in France or Bologna in Italy. The Catalans, coached by Chelsea-linked Michel, had been in the title race for large parts but are still pushing for a historic finish to the season as they aim for UEFA Champions League qualification.

They begin the weekend sitting seven points clear of fourth placed Atletico, despite an inconsistent run of form in recent months. Their most recent outing saw them edge out Real Betis by three goals to two in an entertaining contest a couple of weeks ago with Cristhian Stuani scoring a 92nd minute winning goal in that game.

THE TEAM NEWS

ATLETICO MADRID

Atletico are without midfielder Pablo Barrios, who is missing through suspension, whilst Memphis Depay is out injured and Mario Hermoso is also doubtful.

PREDICTED XI (5-3-2): Oblak; Llorente, Witsel, Gimenez, Reinildo, Riquelme; Koke, Saul, Lino; Griezmann, Morata

UNAVAILABLE: Barrios (Suspended), Depay (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE: Hermoso (Injured)

GIRONA

Joel Casals is out injured whilst Ivan Martin is suspended. Ricard Artero is a doubt for the Catalans alongside Ukraine international midfielder Viktor Tsygankov.

PREDICTED XI (4-2-3-1): Gazzaniga; Couto, E. Garcia, Juanpe, Blind; Herrera, A. Garcia; Portu, Torre, Savio; Dovbyk

UNAVAILABLE: Martin (Suspended), Casals (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE: Artero (Injured), Tsygankov (Injured)

THE PREDICTION

We have a potentially really entertaining clash at the Metropolitano this weekend. Atletico Madrid could really drag Girona back into the fight to stay in the top five, whilst the Catalans have the opportunity to allow Athletic to leapfrog Atletico in this match day. Atletico have not been keeping nearly as many clean sheets as they usually do, whilst the visitors have been one of the more entertaining teams to watch on the continent throughout the campaign. Both teams scoring seems a good bet for this one.

TIP: BOTH TEAMS TO SCORE
