THE LOWDOWN
ATLETICO MADRID
Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid remain in the 2023/24 La Liga title race but they must recover from a defeat in their most recent outing, last weekend. Los Rojiblancos were defeated by a goal to nil by fellow challengers, Barcelona, with a goal coming from Joao Felix, who is on loan at Barca from Atletico Madrid.
Despite that, the capital city club have been genuinely excellent this season with an improvement in all facets of the game throughout this campaign, but especially in attack. They have scored 45 goals in 19 games in both La Liga and the group stages of the UEFA Champions League this season as they challenge at the top end of the table.
ALMERIA
It has been a truly awful season for Almeria and it got worse in midweek as they crashed out of the Copa del Rey. The Andalusians were beaten by a goal to nil away to fourth-tier side, Barbastro, in the second round of the cup. That, combined with their league form, is making this very much a season to forget.
Gaizka Garitano’s side begin the match day sitting rock-bottom in La Liga with no victories in 15 matches with 11 defeats and four draws so far this season. They are already seven points adrift of Real Mallorca in 17th and their defensive record has been abysmal in La Liga with 37 goals conceded in those 15 matches.

THE PREDICTION
Despite their recent inconsistency in the league with defeats away to Las Palmas and Barcelona, Atletico Madrid remain a much-improved version of themselves and will host Almeria as genuine title contenders this weekend. Almeria travel north to the capital knowing they are setting a record-breaking pace to become statistically the worst team in La Liga history. A heavy and comfortable home win is to be expected at the Metropolitano on Sunday.
BETTING TIP: ATLETICO MADRID TO WIN -1 HANDICAP
