Marcelino’s Athletic Club come into this on the back of playing both of the high-flying Seville clubs Real Betis and Sevilla. The Basque side have been quite mediocre with a few brilliant highs early on, a couple of embarrassing lows but mainly middle-of-the-table form since Marcelino’s appointment last January. They now come up against a Real Madrid side that have cruised to the top-of-the-table with some vital wins in the last month or so - one of those biggest victories being a slender 1-0 win at home to Athletic at the start of December. Another low-scoring Los Blancos victory would appear a likely outcome for this one.
