THE LOWDOWN
ATHLETIC BILBAO
Former Barcelona coach Ernesto Valverde has produced an impressive Athletic Club side that begin the 35th match day of the 2023/24 La Liga campaign sitting just six points outside of the top four and the UEFA Champions League qualification spots with four games of the season to go and a feint hope of sneaking into the top four ahead of Atletico Madrid.
They got back on the winning track last weekend with an entertaining 2-0 defeat of Getafe in the capital. Inaki Williams notched a brace of goals before the Basque giants and Copa del Rey winners were reduced to nine men due to red cards for both central defenders Yeray Alvarez and Aitor Paredes.
OSASUNA
After finishing seventh and qualifying for the UEFA Europa Conference League last season, as well as reaching the final of the Copa del Rey, it was always expected to be a challenge for Jago Arrasate and Osasuna to mount a similar campaign this time around and they are fading into mid-table obscurity with a few weeks left of the campaign.
The Pamplona-based club come into this one on the back of a continuation of some really poor recent form. They were beaten 2-0 by Real Betis at El Sadar last weekend with goals being scored by Ayoze Perez and Pablo Fornals before half-time. That means Osasuna have now suffered four successive defeats in the league.

THE PREDICTION
There are some that would believe this game represents something of a local or regional derby but that is a political debate for another time. What is more pressing is for Athletic to dispel the belief already perpetuated by Unai Simon that their wins ‘don’t mean anything’ anymore after their poor run of form after winning the cup. However, as they seek to finish well, they welcome an out of form Osasuna side to San Mames and Athletic are the firm favourites for this one.
