THE LOWDOWN

ALMERIA

Former Eibar boss Gaizka Garitano took charge of Almeria a few months ago but things did not improve so Rubi came in as their third permanent manager of the campaign and, once again, things have stagnated. The Andalusians have, remarkably, made it to the half-way stage of the 2023/24 campaign winless in La Liga.

In their 19 matches so far this season, they have collected just five points with 14 defeats so far this season and they begin this match day sitting 11 points adrift of Celta outside of the bottom three and the relegation places. They come into this one on the back of a 1-0 loss away to Osasuna in their most recent outing.

GIRONA

Last season, in their first season back in Spain’s top-flight, Girona finished firmly in the middle-of-the-table and they were one of the most entertaining teams to watch, too. Now, still under the management of Michel, the City Football Group Catalans are very much involved in the title race this season, quite astonishingly.

The visitors begin the 20th match day sitting level on points with league leaders Real Madrid and only behind Los Blancos due to the head-to-head rule. They have kept their entertaining style intact, too, with their 19 matches consisting of 70 goals this season. They come into this one on the back of a 2-0 defeat of Elche in their most recent outing in the cup, last weekend.

THE TEAM NEWS

ALMERIA

Matheus Sanca, as well as Iddrisu Baba and Houboulang Mendes, are unavailable due to international callips, whilst the likes of Luis Suarez remain unavailable due to injury.

PREDICTED XI (4-2-3-1): Maximiano; Pubill, Montes, Gonzalez, Akieme; Lopy, Robertone; Baptistao, Arribas, Embarba; Ramazani

UNAVAILABLE: Sanca (International Duty), Mendes (International Duty), Baba (International Duty), Suarez (Injured), Puigmal (Injured), Melero (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE: Kone (Injured)

GIRONA

The likes of Eric Garcia, David Lopez and Viktor Tsygankov remain unavailable for this weekend due to injury, whilst Yangel Herrera and Borja Garcia are doubtful.

PREDICTED XI (4-4-1-1): Gazzaniga; Couto, Martinez, Blind, Gutierrez; Savio, Martin, Garcia, Fernandez; Torre; Dovbyk

UNAVAILABLE: Garcia (Injured), Lopez (Injured), Tsygankov (Injured), Casals (Injured), Artero (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE: Herrera (Injured), Borja Garcia (Injured), Villa (Injured)

THE PREDICTION

In 2022, these two teams gained promotion from the second-tier but are heading in very different directions. There is a 43-point gap between these two sides that started out as peers just a few months ago, both with the initial expectation to simply survive. Almeria remain winless and, quite frankly, they are now coming up against one of, if not the, best teams in Spain. Girona really should continue their outstanding campaign with a victory down south.

TIP: GIRONA TO WIN
