THE LOWDOWN
ALAVES
Deportivo Alaves gained promotion to the top-flight last season via some very dramatic playoffs in the Segunda Division. The Basque club will be one of the sides that are battling against the bottom three and the relegation places, doing so in what has become modern day football in Spain by using fairly aggressive and generally defensive-focused football.
The home team began the 2023/24 La Liga campaign with what will probably become a very common and typically low-scoring encounter as they were defeated by a goal to nil away to Cadiz. Fede scored early for the Andalusians but did go down to ten men for the final few minutes with Alaves unable to get level.
SEVILLA
Last season, Sevilla appointed Jose Luis Mendilibar during the March international break and he kept the Andalusians in La Liga and actually launched them up the table towards the top seven. Whilst doing so, he ended up guiding them to yet another UEFA Europa League triumph, defeating both Manchester United and Juventus over two legs before a victory in Budapest over Roma on penalties.
They come into this on the back of another European penalty shootout, this time losing to Manchester City in Piraeus for the UEFA Super Cup. The visitors started their La Liga campaign in disappointing fashion, losing 2-1 at home to a Valencia side that are expected to struggling against relegation this season.
THE TEAM NEWS
ALAVES
Alaves’ manager, Luiz Garcia Plaza, named a 5-4-1 system last weekend and will be immensely frustrated to lose Giuliano Simeone for a substantial period of time after a severe broken leg in pre-season. With limited options, they may well remain unchanged.
PREDICTED XI (5-4-1): Sivera; Gorosabel, Abqar, Sedlar, Marin, Duarte; Guridi, Blanco, Guevara, Rioja; de la Fuente
UNAVAILABLE: Simeone (Injured)

SEVILLA
Jose Luis Mendilibar is very much a ‘back to basics’ coach and will likely stick with deploying the 4-2-3-1 system used against Manchester City in midweek. He will have to make a defensive change for this one, though, with Loic Bade suspended after his red card last weekend.
PREDICTED XI (4-2-3-1): Bono; Navas, Gattoni, Gudelj, Acuna; Jordan, Rakitic; Ocampos, Torres, Lamela; En-Nesyri
UNAVAILABLE: Bade (Suspended), Nianzou (Injured), Alfonso Pastor (Injured)

THE PREDICTION
Coming back into La Liga for the first time in a couple of years, Alaves will simply be thinking of nothing else other than survival. The Basque club have a very good chance of staying up but wins at home against tired opposition will be essential. It is indeed likely Sevilla, on a scorching hot evening in Athens, will feel the effects of that in the north of Spain this weekend. The visitors started with a defeat and, despite a good performance against Manchester City, Alaves really will fancy their chances at the Mendizorrotza.
