THE TEAM NEWS
REAL MADRID
- Real Madrid tackle Fenerbahce in the third-place match at the 2019 Audi Cup having continued their underwhelming run of results in pre-season with a 1-0 defeat against Tottenham Hotspur courtesy of a Harry Kane goal after some calamitous defending from Real.
- The 1-0 score against Spurs could have been worse but for the numerous interventions of Keylor Navas who was in goal due to the absence of first-choice 'keeper Courtois through injury. Another bright spot in their performance against the 2019 UEFA Champions League finalists was the performance of young forward Rodrygo who caused the Spurs defence a number of problems with his direct running.
- Having played only yesterday it is likely there will be some squad rotation but they are a little limited due to the absence of Jovic, Mendy, Courtois, Asensio, Brahimi, Casemiro, James Rodriguez, Eder Militão and Bale who did not travel to Germany.
FENERBAHCE
- Fenerbahce were hammered 6-1 by host club Bayern Munich in their 2019 Audi Cup semi-final encounter on Tuesday in a match they will want to forget and they need to try and recover some pride against Real Madrid.
- The Turkish club competed fairly well until conceding the opening goal but after losing their captain Hasan Ali Kaldirim though injury shortly afterwards they struggled to cope with the Bayern onslaught and trailed 5-0 at half-time. Kruse did pull a goal back for Fenerbahce as the intensity of the German team faded during the final 30 minutes.
- The Fenerbahce fans were very vocal in their disapproval of their team’s performance against Bayern which led to replacement captain Nabil Dirar opting to leave the field of play during the second-half only to be persuaded to come back and carry on.
THE PREDICTION
Real Madrid’s pre-season form so far has not provided much hope ahead of the new season but they will have a chance to register a much-needed victory against a Fenerbahce team who were outclassed in their semi-final defeat against Bayern yesterday. Real may opt to give some extra game-time to some of their younger squad members but that may be no bad thing as Rodrygo showed in his performance against Spurs. Even a less experience side should still have enough throughout the squad to ensure victory against the Turkish team, though with their own defensive issues they may struggle to keep a clean sheet in doing so.
