THE LOWDOWN

RB LEIPZIG

Reigning DFB-Pokal holders RB Leipzig have the opportunity to defend their title and secure the second major trophy in their club’s history with victory here. They’ve come a long way since earlier on in the season, when a poor start saw them off the pace in all competitions. The arrival of Marco Rose though, totally reversed their fortunes and with a third-place finish in the Bundesliga secure, they now look to showcase their progress under Rose by tasting cup glory for the second consecutive season.

EINTRACHT FRANKFURT

Oliver Glasner’s final game in charge of Eintracht Frankfurt sees them attempt to bring a second major trophy back to Deutsche Bank Park following their Europa League triumph last season. It’s been a campaign to forget in terms of the Bundesliga with Glasner’s side finishing in seventh-place, meaning that only victory in the DFB-Pokal final would see Eintracht play European football next season. But they did at least finish the campaign strongly, winning two of their last three league games without suffering defeat.

THE TEAM NEWS

RB LEIPZIG

RB Leipzig will surely line up with the central defensive duo of Lukas Klostermann and Willi Orban due to the suspension of Josko Gvardiol. Aside from that, their team will likely be what most expects with Christopher Nkunku and Timo Werner starting up front together. Andre Silva misses out through injury, whilst first-choice goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi is a long-term absentee.

PREDICTED XI (4-2-2-2): Blaswich; Henrichs, Klostermann, Orban, Halstenberg; Laimer, Haidara; Szoboszlai, Olmo; Werner, Nkunku

UNAVAILABLE: Gulacsi (Injured), Gvardiol (Suspended), Silva (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE:

EINTRACHT FRANKFURT

Sebastian Rode is facing a race against time to be passed fit for the final, whilst Hrvoje Smolcic definitely won’t feature due to injury. The expectation is that they will field their usual 3-4-3 formation, although it’s possible that they revert to a back four with Jesper Lindstorm starting on the right-hand-side of an attacking midfield three with Daichi Kamada central, Mario Gotze on the left and Randal Kolo Muani up top.

PREDICTED XI (3-4-3): Trapp; Tuta, Hasebe, Ndicka; Buta, Rode, Sow, Max; Kamada, Kolo Muani, Gotze

UNAVAILABLE: Smolcic (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE: Rode (Fitness)

THE PREDICTION

Both RB Leipzig and Eintracht Frankfurt know what is takes to win a major final as they showed last season, but that won’t extinguish the nerves which is likely to be present on both sides. With that in mind, expect a cautious opening as each prioritise defensive stability and not falling behind early on. Over the course of the season, RB Leipzig have been comfortably the more consistent under Marco Rose and with Christopher Nkunku fully fit, their attacking potency has been boosted further in recent weeks. That extra firepower and quality within their attacking midfield through Szoboszlai and Olmo may just prove decisive against Eintract and lead to RB Leipzig edging out Oliver Glasner’s men.

TIP: RB LEIPZIG TO WIN
