THE LOWDOWN
VIZELA
It has been a really poor start to the 2023/24 Portuguese Primeira Liga campaign. Last season they were coached by Alvaro Pacheco but he has since moved on for Estoril and been replaced by the unconvincing appointment of journeyman coach Pablo Villar. Vizela are one of the teams that are most expected to struggle down at the bottom end of the table this season.
They began with a loss to Sporting CP in a game whereby they scared the Lisbon giants. They had gone 2-0 down early on but fought back to 2-2 before conceding late on, once again, and losing. Since then they have collected just one point with a 2-2 draw at home to Arouca being followed up with a 2-0 defeat to Vitoria, maintaining Vitoria’s current 100% record.
GIL VICENTE
In 2022, after starting the season slowly, Gil Vicente managed to finish in the top six and gain UEFA Europa Conference League. They were knocked out early and then continued that form into the Primeira Liga, where they struggled and finished in the bottom-half. Over the summer, though, they have replaced Daniel Ramos with the impressive Vitor Campelos and they will be expected to push back into the top-half.
They began the 2023/24 campaign with a 1-0 loss to lower league Oliveirense in the first round of the Taca da Liga in July before following that up with a 5-0 annihilation of Portimonense on the opening day of the Primeira Liga season. Since then, though, they have suffered back-to-back narrow defeats against both Vitoria and Benfica.
THE TEAM NEWS
VIZELA
Despite their poor start to the campaign and the fact that they have a fully fit and available squad, it remains a small squad and Vizela are unlikely to make many changes.
PREDICTED XI (3-4-3): Buntic; Wilson, Anderson, Escoval; Oliveira, Samu, Bustamante, Pereira; Moreira, Essende, Lacava

GIL VICENTE
Despite their recent losses, Gil Vicente are actually performing well and, as a result of that, an unchanged lineup would therefore appear quite likely for this one.
PREDICTED XI (4-2-3-1): Andrew; Ze Carlos, Pereira, Fernandes, Buta; Tiba, Gbane; Marlon, Fujimoto, Dominguez; Baturina

THE PREDICTION
The theme of Portuguese domestic football over recent seasons has been low-scoring football with very little entertainment. These two have actually been very different with Vizela’s three matches in the league so far this season consisting of 11 goals, whilst Gil Vicente have had 13 goals in their three matches, too. However, despite similar records, Vitor Campelos’ visitors are very much the favoured side for what could be quite an entertaining encounter.
TIP: DOUBLE CHANCE – GIL VICENTE TO WIN OR DRAW
