THE LOWDOWN
FARENSE
Following promotion last season, Farense are expected to face a tough campaign of battling against an immediate relegation back down to the second-tier. Former Pacos de Ferreira coach Jose Mota, who was in charge of Pacos at the start of last season, a season in which they were eventually automatically relegated, remains in charge of the home team after taking over in February and guiding them to the top-flight. That was Mota’s fifth promotion to the Primeira Liga.
In terms of incomings and outgoings, they have lost key left-back Abner to Racing Daring White Molenbeek, who have been promoted to the Belgian Jupiler Pro League for this season. Other than that departure, though, the other outgoings are players who may have struggled to cut it in the top-flight. They have gone for a younger selection of players for signings with the oldest of their six additions so far this summer being 28 year-old centre-back Artur Jorge, joining on a free transfer from Al-Bataeh.
CASA PIA
A team that Farense will be hoping to emulate in the 2023/24 Portuguese Primeira Liga campaign will be Casa Pia. The visitors gained their first ever promotion to the top-flight in 2022 and set about being the surprise package for much of the campaign. They eventually finished the season in tenth but spent the majority of the campaign flirting with the top five or six and UEFA Europa Conference League qualification.
Filipe Martins, formerly of Feirense and Mafra, remains in charge of Os Gansos for this campaign with their defensive and resolute style of football imperative to their success – and representative of Portuguese coaching and football as a whole with it being a usually low-scoring league. A key component of their success were the impressive performances of 33 year-old goalkeeper Ricardo Batista.

CASA PIA
During his successful stint in charge of Casa Pia, Filipe Martins has enjoyed a preferred formation of 3-4-3. He heads into the opening day of the Primeira Liga season with a fully fit and available squad.

THE PREDICTION
This one is between two seemingly evenly matched sides that have similar tactical approaches and ideas with very similar recent form. Farense are looking to emulate the relative success that Casa Pia enjoyed last season. The home team, following promotion last season, may have some concerns with Jose Mota in charge. He is an excellent coach at getting teams out of the second-tier but not quite in the top-flight. The visitors are a low-scoring and defensive side, regardless of opposition, so under 2.5 goals seems quite likely.
TIP: UNDER 2.5 GOALS
