THE LOWDOWN

ESTRELA DA AMADORA

Following the merger of two clubs a couple of years ago, Clube Desportivo Estrela and Club Sintra Football, Estrela da Amadora enjoyed two promotions in three seasons and, in May, gained promotion to the Portuguese top-flight for the first time ever with their experienced manager Sergio Vieira, formerly of Farense and Famalicao.

The newly-promoted ‘Tricolores’ come into this one on the back of a 2-2 draw with Chaves in their most recent outing, at the weekend. Estrela da Amadora begin the weekend’s round of fixtures sitting in the middle-of-the-table with just one win in their opening six matches of the campaign but they have had a tough test early on with the likes of Benfica and Vitoria.

SPORTING BRAGA

Carlos Carvalhal departed at the start of last season and he was replaced by Artur Jorge with Artur Jorge improving Braga’s results as well as performances. They finished third, breaking up ‘Os Tres Grandes’ (The Big Three), finishing above Sporting CP and qualifying for this season’s UEFA Champions League.

They have reached the group stages of that tournament with victories in qualification against Backa Topola and Panathinaikos. In their opening six matches of the 2023/24 Primeira Liga, Braga have won three, drawn one and lost two. The visitors come into this on the back of an impressive 4-1 hammering of then league leaders Boavista at the weekend.

THE TEAM NEWS

SPORTING BRAGA

Braga do have the complication of a UEFA Champions League match next week but with a few days in between, Artur Jorge is expected to name an unchanged eleven for this weekend.

PREDICTED XI (4-2-3-1): Matheus; Gomez, Saatci, Niakate, Borja; Al-Musrati, Zalazar; Horta, Pizzi, Djalo; Banza

THE PREDICTION

This match is taking place on a Thursday evening and that could be a clue as to how the game turns out. Estrela da Amadora have made life difficult for bigger teams this season with valiant displays against both Vitoria and Benfica to kick off the campaign. They now face another ‘bigger’ side with Braga having their attention quickly turning to Union Berlin next weekend. Braga will remain favourites for what should be a tough and low-scoring test.

TIP: SPORTING BRAGA TO WIN & UNDER 3.5 GOALS
