THE LOWDOWN

BOAVISTA

Boavista are one of two sides outside of ‘Os Tres Grandes’ (The Big Three) to have won the Portuguese Primeira Liga title, doing so at the turn of the century. They will have dreams of finishing in the top five and returning to European football this season and they began the 2023/24 campaign in impressive fashion.

On the opening day of the season they headed into second-half stoppage-time 2-1 down to reigning champions Benfica but managed to pull off a shock 3-2 turnaround. They followed that up with a 4-1 demolition of Portimonense before sharing a 1-1 draw with Casa Pia. Prior to the international break, they moved to the top-of-the-table with a 2-1 win away to Estoril.

CHAVES

Like a few other sides of similar ilk, such as Casa Pia and Rio Ave, Chaves gained promotion back to the top-flight and immediately comfortably established themselves in the middle-of-the-table. They flirted with a run into the top six and the UEFA Europa Conference League places but eventually drifted into the middle-of-the-table.

Now, though, they come into this on the back of a terrible start to the campaign and begin this weekend’s round of fixtures sitting rock-bottom. They lost their manager, Vitor Campelos, to Gil Vicente over the summer and replaced him with journeyman Joao Gomes. They have suffered four successive defeats out of four so far this season.

THE TEAM NEWS

BOAVISTA

After a strong start to the campaign, Petit will be pleased that he has more or less a fully fit and available squad so will be able to name an unchanged team for this one.

PREDICTED XI (4-2-3-1): Goncalves; Malheiro, Awaziem, Abascal, Ferreira; Perez, Makouta; Salvador Agra, Reisinho, Morais; Bozenik

UNAVAILABLE: Cesar (Injured)

CHAVES

Joao Gomes is searching for answers but he has a small squad, albeit a small squad that is fully fit and available for their trip away to Boavista this weekend.

PREDICTED XI (4-2-3-1): Souza; Correia, Rodrigues, Nogueira, Langa; Phete, Nwakali; Sousa, Lameiras, Abass; Hector

THE PREDICTION

League leaders Boavista, under the management of Petit, come into this on the back of a start to the season that will leave the club and players buoyant. They have been very impressive, especially going forward, which is not necessarily something representative of Portuguese football in general, especially domestically. They now face a Chaves side that have lost any spark they had from last season and look set for a fairly miserable campaign. With their home advantage, too, Boavista should win this one quite comfortably.
