NEWCASTLE UNITED PREVIEW: CUPS TAKES ON EXTRA LAYER OF IMPORTANCE
Newcastle have struggled in the Premier League this season and they head into this match on the back of consecutive league defeats. That makes this match even more important, especially when taking into account the Magpies’ long trophy drought and the desperation of their supporters to see that drought come to an end.
In order to succeed here, they’ll need to improve going forward, registering 11 shots this past Sunday with only three being on target. Newcastle also know the importance to regaining the defensive stability which has deserted them under Eddie Howe this season.
CHELSEA PREVIEW: AIMING FOR TWO NEWCASTLE WINS IN LESS THAN A WEEK
Only a few days after beating Newcastle 2-1 at Stamford Bridge in the Premier League, Chelsea now look to complete a double of victories against the Magpies, this time in the Carabao Cup. Under Enzo Maresca, the Blues have won seven of their last nine in all competitions and they make the long trip up north with momentum behind them.
Being able to freshen up a strong squad is no doubt key to Maresca’s success, ensuring his squad remains motivated and focused with places in the team up for grabs all the time. The League Cup represents a big opportunity for Chelsea and their head coach will be well aware of that.
NEWCASTLE UNITED TEAM NEWS: FOUR OUT, WITH GORDON DOUBTFUL
The likes of Kieran Trippier, Sven Botman and Callum Wilson will all miss out through injury, whilst winger Anthony Gordon faces a late fitness test. Expect Eddie Howe to field a strong team with a trophy at stake.
PREDICTED XI (4-3-3): Pope; Livramento, Schar, Burn, Hall; Tonali, Guimaraes, Joelinton; Murphy, Isak, Barnes
UNAVAILABLE: Botman (Injured), Dubravka (Injured), Lascelles (Injured), Trippier (Injured), Wilson (Injured)
QUESTIONABLE: Gordon (Injured)
CHELSEA TEAM NEWS: PALMER COULD START ON BENCH SHOULD MARESCA OPT TO ROTATE
It would be no surprise to see Enzo Maresca utilise his squad here with players such as Christopher Nkunku, Mykhailo Mudryk and Jadon Sancho to name just three, all desperate for gametime. Joao Felix is also expected to play with the likes of Cole Palmer, Pedro Neto and Nicolas Jackson all players who could be on the bench.
PREDICTED XI (4-2-3-1): Sanchez; Gusto, Fofana, Colwill, Cucurella; Caicedo, Fernandez; Mudryk, Nkunku, Sancho; Felix
UNAVAILABLE: Kellyman (Injured)
QUESTIONABLE:
NEWCASTLE UNITED VS CHELSEA PREDICTION
Expect Newcastle to come of the traps really quickly here in a bid to unsettle Chelsea, using Isak’s pace as a focal point to their attacking play. They boast the creativity within their midfield in Tonali to fashion opportunities, especially with two direct wingers playing alongside Isak. But on the flipside, keeping the ball out at the other hand will be difficult for a side with just three clean sheets in all competitions so far season.
It would be a surprise if we did not see both teams find the net as they did in their Premier League clash this past weekend. However, the outcome of this cup tie really could go either way, especially with home advantage in Newcastle favour as opposed to the Blues.
