THE TEAM NEWS
SANTOS LAGUNA
- Santos were the best team during the Apertura regular season but they haven’t been able to repeat that feat in the Clausura and have notched just one win thus far while going three straight contests without a win. They are coming off a 2-2 away draw at Puebla, which has them in 13th place of the standings with five points (W1, D2, L2).
- Los Guerreros do not have any absentees ahead of this match due to injury. However, playmaker Diego Valdes might not feature as he has been left on the bench during the last few games and Eduardo Aguirre has been starting in his place.
Expected starting XI: Jonathan Orozco; Jose van Rankin, Doria, Felix Torres (Hugo Rodriguez), Gerardo Arteaga; Fernando Gorriaran, Ulises Rivas; Erick Castillo, Brian Lozano, Eduardo Aguirre; Julio Furch
TIGRES UANL
- Tigres UANL have been quite inconsistent of late and they have traded wins with losses in each of their last four contests. They are coming off a 3-0 home win over Guadalajara, but they have lost their two away matches in the Clausura and sit in eighth place of the standings with seven points (W2, D1, L2).
- Hugo Ayala has missed Tigres’ last two matches and should be considered as questionable ahead of this contest. Rafael Carioca should be fit enough to play, while Diego Reyes and Francisco Meza have both been ruled out, and Jose Torres has followed the same path.
Expected starting XI: Nahuel Guzman; Luis Rodriguez, Carlos Salcedo, Jorge Torres Nilo; Rafael Carioca, Jesus Duenas, Guido Pizarro, Javier Aquino; Enner Valencia, Andre-Pierre Gignac, Luis Quinones
THE PREDICTION
Tigres have enough talent to complicate any team in the competition, but they have been extremely inconsistent this season and have lost both away matches to date. Santos Laguna have been under-performing but there’s no question they play their best football when at home. In fact, they’re yet to lose a home game between the Apertura and Clausura regular seasons. That should be enough to list Santos as favourites here despite the fact they own the league’s worst defence with 10 goals conceded in just five games.
