THE TEAM NEWS

PUMAS UNAM

  • Pumas UNAM remain undefeated following their first two matches of the Clausura and right now they own the league’s most powerful attack with six goals scored. They remain a force to be reckoned with when they play at home having posted a W6, D2, L2 mark at Estadio Olimpico Universitario since the start of the 2019 Torneo Apertura.
  • Pumas should be quite close to full strength ahead of this contest. Their lone absentee here is likely to be defender Nicolas Freire who continues to deal with a nagging injury that he has had for a while now.

Expected starting XI: Alfredo Saldivar; Alan Mendoza, Luis Quintana, Manuel Mayorga, Alan Mozo Rodriguez; Pablo Barrera, Andres Iniestra; Favio Alvarez, Sebastian Saucedo, Juan Pablo Vigon; Carlos Gonzalez

MONTERREY

  • Moterrey began their season with a 2-2 away draw against Morelia last week. They have been improving on the road of late thanks to a W2, D1 mark away from home in the regular season but they still have lost five of 10 games (W3, D2, L5) since the start of the 2019-20 season.
  • Towering striker Vincent Janssen should be considered as questionable since he missed last week’s match due to a virus. Colombian forward Aviles Hurtado is a long-term absentee and he will remain out for the foreseeable future.

Expected starting XI: Marcelo Barovero; Stefan Medina, Edson Gutierrez, Nicolas Sanchez, Leonel Vangioni; Celso Ortiz, Carlos Rodriguez; Maximiliano Meza; Dorlan Pabon, Rogelio Funes Mori, Rodolfo Pizarro

THE PREDICTION

Pumas currently own the league’s best attack while Monterrey seem to have a knack for getting involved in high-scoring matches with three of their last five games in the regular season dating back to last season producing over 2.5 goals. That should be the case once again as the same thing has happened in four of Pumas’ last seven matches. These two sides match up quite well against each other but Monterrey are in dire need of a win and they will take solace on their impressive H2H record against Pumas. They are undefeated in their last eight games in all competitions against UNAM (W6, D2) and that should be enough to see them win this.
