THE TEAM NEWS

MANCHESTER UNITED

  • Manchester United head to Cardiff with a perfect winning record of five wins from their five previous matches in pre-season having defeated Perth Glory, Leeds United, Inter Milan, Tottenham and Kristiansund in a schedule that has seen them play in Australia, Singapore, China and Norway.
  • If United defeat Milan by a margin of three goals or more they’ll win the International Champions Cup, but if United fail to do so then Benfica will be crowned the champions of the exhibition competition.
  • Solksjaer used 22 players in Norway on Tuesday in their 1-0 win over his hometown as he changed the entire team around on the hour mark, he will continue to give game-time to the bulk of his squad. They will definitely be without Eric Bailly due to a knee injury whereas Alexis Sanchez is back in training. It is unknown at the time of writing if Romelu Lukaku will still be at the club as he looks to be heading to Italy with Paulo Dybala potentially coming to Old Trafford.

AC MILAN

  • AC Milan are without a win in their three previous pre-season friendly matches under new coach Marco Giampaolo, they started their schedule with a 1-1 draw against Serie C team Novara before jetting off to the USA where they lost 1-0 to both Bayern Munich and Benfica.
  • Failure to score in either of the matches on their trip to the States will have been a disappointment as they were not without chances in their defeat against Benfica having created a number of opportunities to break the deadlock before they conceded the only goal of the game.
  • Milan are looking to bolster their team with the addition of exciting Portuguese forward Rafael Leao from Lille and Brazilian defender Leo Duarte from Flamengo and if their signings are confirmed they could be involved against Man United.

THE PREDICTION

Manchester United have had a good pre-season in terms of results with an unblemished record of five wins from five matches, and they will be looking to extend that run against an AC Milan team that are possibly a little behind United in terms of fitness and cohesion. The Serie A season is not due to start until a couple of weeks later than the English Premier League and the Italian club also have a new coach, Marco Giampaolo, in charge now for just over six weeks so it is very much early days as he assesses his squad. Man United can take advantage of their advanced preparations and superior fitness to defeat Milan 2-1 which would see them go into the new Premier League season with a 100% winning record from pre-season.
