THE LOWDOWN
SASSUOLO
Under the management of Alessio Dionisi, Sassuolo have slid into the Serie A relegation battle and it is extremely surprising to many that they persisted with the former Empoli boss for so long. However, after their 3-2 defeat at home to his former club Empoli on Saturday, the decision was finally taken to part ways.
In that match, Simone Bastoni scored a 94th minute winning goal for the Florence-based club and that has left Sassuolo sitting level on points with Hellas Verona and Cagliari, who are 18th and 19th respectively. They have collected just a point from their last six matches with only Frosinone and Salernitana conceding more than them so far this season.
NAPOLI
Defending champions Napoli moved onto their third manager of the campaign last weekend as Maurizio Sarri’s former assistant coach from his time at Napoli, Francesco Calzona, who is still coaching the Slovakian national team ahead of UEFA EURO 2024, replaced Walter Mazzarri as the Neapolitans languish in the middle-of-the-table.
They began the Calzona era with a 1-1 draw against Barcelona last week with Victor Osimhen scoring a 75th minute equalising goal, 14 minutes after Robert Lewandowski had given Barca the lead. Napoli, keen to use the new manager bounce to their advantage, were then held to a 1-1 draw by a struggling an out of form Cagliari side in Sardinia at the weekend.
THE TEAM NEWS
SASSUOLO
Sassuolo’s key man, Domenico Berardi, is out injured for this weekend, whilst their defender, Martin Erlic, is also a doubt as they face Napoli.
PREDICTED XI (4-2-3-1): Consigli; Pedersen, Tressoldi, Ferrari, Doig; Henrique, Boloca; Volpato, Thorstvedt, Lauriente; Pinamonti
UNAVAILABLE: Berardi (Injured)
QUESTIONABLE: Erlic (Injured)
NAPOLI
There is only one potential absentee for this weekend’s clash with Sassuolo as former Hellas Verona attacker, Cyril Ngonge, is a doubt for the trip to Sassuolo.
PREDICTED XI (4-3-3): Meret; Mazzocchi, Rrahmani, Juan, Olivera; Anguissa, Lobotka, Zielinski; Raspadori, Osimhen, Kvaratskhelia
UNAVAILABLE:
QUESTIONABLE: Ngonge (Injured)
THE PREDICTION
Now then, the theory of ‘new manager bounce’ was supposed to be what would propel Napoli to an excellent end to this campaign but the Neapolitans have already stuttered under Francesco Calzona. Now they head to a Sassuolo side desperate for victory and set to wish for their own improvement in results as a result of the aforementioned ‘new manager bounce’. Given that, a double chance bet in favour of the home team looks the way to go for this one, purely from a value perspective.
TIP: DOUBLE CHANCE – SASSUOLO TO WIN OR DRAW
