THE LOWDOWN

SASSUOLO

Alessio Dionisi has been criticised for not quite reaching the heights that were expected of him since he arrived to coach Sassuolo in 2021, after leading Empoli to promotion. They have lost key players, such as Manuel Locatelli, but they will be expected to eventually meaningfully challenge for a top seven finish and European qualification.

They started slowly once again this season but have really turned their form around and will be buoyant ahead of this one. They have enjoyed back-to-back wins against Juventus and Inter in the last week, defeating The Old Lady by four goals to two before knocking Inter off the top-of-the-table. That makes it three wins in their last four matches.

MONZA

After the death of former AC Milan owner and Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, Monza have been affected as he was heavily involved with the running of the club. They gained promotion to Serie A for the first time ever and comfortably survived but will be seeking to kick on and into the top-half this time around, such is their financial ambition.

The visitors have started steadily but will be a little frustrated by three successive draws since they returned to action after the September international break. Their goalless draw with Bologna in midweek coming after the opposition were down to ten men, too. They have managed just one win in their opening six matches.

MONZA

Gianluca Caprari remains out injured for Monza but the visitors will be able to name an unchanged eleven for this weekend’s trip to Sassuolo on Monday.

THE PREDICTION

Alessio Dionisi has often been viewed as underachieving, or at least being a little underwhelming, since he was appointed as Sassuolo manager a couple of seasons ago. However, three victories in their last four matches, including those aforementioned back-to-back victories against Juventus and Internazionale, means that they are looking upwards, once again. They face a Monza side that will be concerned about second season syndrome this year and, whilst remain difficult to defeat, face a tough test in this one given the hosts’ form.
