THE LOWDOWN

SASSUOLO

Since leaving Empoli for Sassuolo in 2021, Alessio Dionisi, it could be argued has underperformed with Neroverdi and they are beginning to stagnate after back-to-back bottom-half finishes. Dionisi is under a bit of pressure and Sassuolo’s start to the campaign, albeit against difficult opposition, will only see that pressure mount and grow.

On the opening day of the season they suffered a 2-0 defeat at home to Atalanta, with both goals coming late on in the match scored by Charles De Ketelaere and Nicolo Zortea. Then, last weekend, again against a tough side, they suffered another 2-0 loss away to reigning champions Napoli with goals coming from Giovanni Di Lorenzo and Victor Osimhen.

HELLAS VERONA

Ahead of the 2022/23 Serie A season, rules were changed so that teams who finished level on points in meaningful positions would play an end of season playoff to determine who would finish where. In the first season since that rule change, Hellas Verona and Spezia finished level on points in 17th and 18th with Hellas Verona eventually coming out on top.

Over the summer they have appointed the impressive Marco Baroni, who led Lecce to Serie A promotion and then a comfortable mid-table finish in the Italian top-flight. Verona have, under Baroni, began this season in extremely impressive style with back-to-back victories. Firstly winning in Florence away to Empoli and then following that up with a 2-1 defeat of Roma.

HELLAS VERONA

Baroni will be without Isak Hien due to suspension this weekend, as well as the continued absence of several first-team attackers, but will be keen to name a team as close to last week’s win against Roma as possible.

PREDICTED XI (3-4-2-1): Monitpo; Magnani, Amione, Dawidowicz; Terracciano, Hongla, Duda, Doig; Ngonge, Folorunsho; Duric

THE PREDICTION

Alessio Dionisi, as mentioned, may well be starting to feel a little pressure in charge of Sassuolo. His overall intention is to get his side playing an attractive and attacking style of football, which is theme with the majority of modern coached in Serie A. He takes on a Verona side that have taken no time in adapting to a new managers’ attacking methods and, albeit not free scoring, will be confident of hurting Sassuolo, even away from home. Both teams scoring seems like a good bet for this one.
