THE LOWDOWN
SASSUOLO
Sassuolo failed to win for the fifth game in succession as they were held by already-relegated Sampdoria. Manolo Gabbiadini’s eighth-minute goal was quickly cancelled out by Domenico Berardi before a strike shortly after from Matheus Henrique saw Sassuolo turn the game on its head by the 11th minute.
Despite leading for much of the contest, Sassuolo were unable to hold on as Martin Erlic turned the ball into his own net with 12 minutes of play remaining in what turned into a frustrating result, although it did mean that they avoided a third straight defeat.
Sassuolo will now wrap their campaign up in front of their home fans and will hope to go out on a high. They are solid on home soil with them losing just one of their last seven. That came in their last home game against Monza but they will believe they can bounce back here.
FIORENTINA
Fiorentina got the better of Roma and will now aim to end their league campaign on a positive note, although it is impossible to ignore the feeling that they will have one eye on next week’s UEFA Europa Conference League final against English Premier League outfit West Ham.
Stephan El Shaarawy gave Roma the early lead and it looked to be enough for the visitors but a late show from Fiorentina stunned their opponents. With five minutes left on the clock, Luka Jovic levelled the scores before Jonathan Ikone handed his side the winner in the dying stages.
That is now just one loss in all competitions for Fiorentina but they are without a win in their last four away games in Serie A and that record may not improve here with a weakened side potentially taking to the field for this encounter.
THE PREDICTION
Sassuolo are without a win in five but they will view this as a great chance to end the season on a positive note. They are strong on home soil having lost just one of their last seven and they come up against a Fiorentina side that are unlikely to be fully focused on the task in hand. They have performed well of late but have struggled in their last few league games on the road. Coupled with a European cup final on the horizon, the away side can be forgiven for not being concerned by the result here so it would not be a surprise to see Sassuolo avoid defeat in this one.
