THE LOWDOWN
SASSUOLO
Fairly remarkably, at least at the time of writing, Alessio Dionisi remains in charge of Sassuolo as they just about steer themselves clear of sitting in the bottom three and the relegation places. They begin the 26th match day of the 2023/24 Serie A campaign, albeit with a game-in-hand, sitting just above the aforementioned bottom three on goal difference.
The home team come into this one on the back of a 3-0 defeat away to Atalanta in their most recent outing, last weekend, with goals from Mario Pasalic, Teun Koopmeiners and Mitchel Bakker for the Bergamasci. They have managed just one victory in their last 12 matches across all competitions, conceding 45 goals in 24 games so far this season.
EMPOLI
After underperforming under the management of Paolo Zanetti at the start of the season and then getting even worse following the return of Aurelio Andreazzoli, Empoli took the decision to bring in Serie A’s miracle worker, Davide Nicola. The man who has pulled off great escapes with both Crotone and Salernitana is attempting to do the same with Empoli this time around.
The Florence-based club come into this one on the back of a remarkable run of form that continued with a creditable 1-1 draw against Fiorentina in the derby last weekend, thanks to a 56th minute equaliser from Mbaye Niang. Empoli are now unbeaten in their last five Serie A matches since Nicola’s appointment in mid-January.

THE PREDICTION
This one is the Alessio Dionisi derby with neither side too happy with the manager; Sassuolo have significantly underperformed under his management, whilst Empoli have simply had to tread water in his absence, albeit they have remained in the top-flight. Dionisi’s time at Sassuolo could well be coming to an end soon and there would be a bit of a story if it was to be the club he departed that forced that decision. Empoli are in excellent form and will fear no one, especially an out of form Sassuolo, with a double chance bet in the visitors’ favour looking the way to go for this one.
TIP: DOUBLE CHANCE – EMPOLI TO WIN OR DRAW
