THE LOWDOWN
SASSUOLO
Sassuolo have been one of the smarter and more progressive clubs in Serie A in recent seasons. They have often played an attacking style of football, regardless of who is in the dugout, and tried to challenge towards the top seven and the European spots. Alessio Dionisi remains in charge of I Neroverdi after a couple of seasons whereby they have been quite inconsistent.
The biggest issue this summer is that it seems as though their forward and captain, Domenico Berardi, could be departing with the Italy international finally closing in on a move to Juventus. In terms of incomings, they have spent about 50 million euros but their biggest outlay was on making Andrea Pinamonti’s loan from Internazionale a permanent move.
ATALANTA
Over the last half a decade or so, Atalanta have often been the biggest overachievers across European football. The Bergamasci managed to qualify for European competition once again last season after beginning a rebuild in the summer of 2022. Under the management of Gian Piero Gasperini, they have one of the best nurturers of talent in Italian football as he moves onto his third or maybe even fourth generation of Atalanta.
The visitors were blessed with the mega money sale of Rasmus Hojlund to Manchester United. The Danish striker has an abundance of raw talent but wasn’t an overly important and effective cog in the Atalanta machine and they have been able to use the money from that sale to sign El Bilal Toure from Almeria and West Ham United’s Gianluca Scamacca. They have also brought in Charles De Ketelaere on loan from AC Milan.
THE TEAM NEWS
SASSUOLO
During his stint in charge of Sassuolo, Alessio Dionisi’s preferred formation has been a 4-3-3 and they are expected to stay the same. They are without Ruan due to suspension and they will also be without both Kristian Thorstvedt and Agustin Alvarez due to injury.
PREDICTED XI (4-3-3): Cragno; Toljan, Ferrari, Erlic, Vina; Matheus, Lopez, Bajrami; Berardi, Pinamonti, Lauriente
UNAVAILABLE: Ruan (Suspended), Alvarez (Injured), Thorstvedt (Injured)

ATALANTA
Gian Piero Gasperini continues to play a very open 3-4-2-1 system with its peak being with Papu Gomez and Josip Ilicic in the two number ten spots. 3-4-3 remains most likely for this one with those two tens being higher and more like wingers.
PREDICTED XI (3-4-2-1): Carnesecchi; Djimsiti, Toloi, Scalvini; Zappacosta, Koopmeiners, de Roon, Bakker; Lookman, De Ketelaere; Scamacca
UNAVAILABLE: Cambiaghi (Suspended), Hateboer (Injured)

THE PREDICTION
In the last decade, Serie A has become one of the most entertaining leagues in the world with the goals per game average really jumping, particularly in the late 2010s and early 2020s. Both of these clubs have been reasons for that as they both try to tactically innovate in order to catch out the bigger clubs at the top end of the table. Atalanta look strong this season and backing them for the win seems a good value bet, especially away from home, but it could also be quite a fun game to watch, regardless of the match result.
TIP: ATALANTA TO WIN & BOTH TEAMS TO SCORE
