THE LOWDOWN

SALERNITANA

After their 3-1 defeat at home to fellow strugglers Empoli a couple of weeks ago, Salernitana took the decision to part company with manager Filippo Inzaghi. He, who had replaced Paulo Sousa only earlier this season, has been replaced by former Italy international Fabio Liverani as they appear destined to drop into the second-tier.

Things did not improve for the Salerno-based outfit as they were hammered 4-0 by champions elect Internazionale at San Siro last weekend with goals coming from Marcus Thuram, Lautaro Martinez, Denzel Dumfries and Marko Arnautovic. They are rock-bottom and begin the weekend sitting seven points adrift of safety.

MONZA

Under the management of Raffaele Palladino, Monza are one of the more ambitious teams in Serie A, having qualified for the top-flight for the first time ever in 2022 with an intention to finish in the top seven and earn European qualification sooner rather than later – and that ambition was met by a famous night last weekend.

Monza took a two-goal lead at home to AC Milan on Sunday evening with late goals in the first-half from Matteo Pessina and Dany Mota. Luka Jovic was sent off early in the second-half for Milan but the Rossoneri fought back to all-square with goals from Olivier Giroud and Christian Pulisic. However, Monza scored two goals late on to defeat their seven-time European champions opposition by four goals to two.

THE PREDICTION

Salernitana are now into the phase of the season where it will take a while for them to be mathematically relegated but that is what the inevitability is. They put up a bit of a fight in the winter but will be coming into spring playing mainly for pride. As mentioned, Monza are an ambitious side but the key next step for them after their emotional and famous win last week will be to back that up with a win that they should get. Backing Monza is the way to go for this one.

TIP: MONZA TO WIN
