THE LOWDOWN

ROMA

At the end of last season, when they were beaten on penalties by Sevilla in the UEFA Europa League final, Jose Mourinho was seemingly set to depart the Italian capital city and the Portuguese manager has already discussed that he has turned down a couple of offers from Saudi Pro League clubs. The former Chelsea manager has stayed, though, and has the aim of bringing UEFA Champions League football back for Roma.

They have financial concerns, as do so many clubs, so have not been able to spend big whatsoever this summer. They have recently brought in PSG’s unwanted midfield duo of Leandro Paredes for a small fee and Renato Sanches on loan with Nemanja Matic moving to Ligue 1 to sign for Stade Rennais.

SALERNITANA

Salernitana’s time back in Italy’s top-flight has been an incredible one. Following promotion back in 2021 was followed by major issues immediately with Claudio Lotito forced to sell by New Years’ Eve of that year as the Lazio owner couldn’t have two clubs in Serie A or they would be administratively relegated. They secured a takeover with minutes to spare and then appointed Davide Nicola to lead a great escape from the bottom three in the second-half of the campaign.

Last season they secured a 15th place finish after doing some interesting business in the transfer window. Nicola was sacked and replaced by former Juventus midfielder Paulo Sousa in the dugout and the Portuguese remains in charge of I Granata for the upcoming campaign.

THE TEAM NEWS

ROMA

Jose Mourinho has been switching formations quite a lot in his time at the Stadio Olimpico and it is likely to a back three this weekend, especially with two crucial players unavailable in attack with Paulo Dybala’s suspension and Tammy Abraham’s injury.

PREDICTED XI (3-5-2): Patricio; Mancini, Smalling, Ndicka; Celik, Pellegrini, Cristante, Paredes, Zalewski; Belotti, El Shaarawy

UNAVAILABLE: Kumbulla (Injured), Dybala (Suspended), Abraham (Injured)

SALERNITANA

Paulo Sousa’s preferred formation is a 3-4-2-1 system and that would also be a match-up for Roma’s likely side. They are without key defender, Flavius Daniliuc, who has suffered an injury and will miss the start of the season.

PREDICTED XI (3-4-1-1): Ochoa; Fazio, Gyomber, Pirola; Candreva, Maggiore, Bohinen, Bradaric; Kastanos; Botheim, Dia

UNAVAILABLE: Daniliuc (Injured)

THE PREDICTION

Salernitana have often provided some attacking and fun displays under both Davide Nicola and Paulo Sousa. However, lacking much quality, they are expected to be down towards the bottom end of the table and going to the Stadio Olimpico side to face a fresh three-at-the-back Mourinho-led side is not an easy task for the visitors’ attack. It may be quite tedious and actually pose some questions moving forward but a low-scoring Roma victory remains the likeliest outcome for this one.

TIP: ROMA TO WIN & UNDER 3.5 GOALS
