THE LOWDOWN

ROMA

When Jose Mourinho gets into his third season at a club, things have tended to fall apart but the former Porto, Manchester United, Chelsea, Real Madrid and Tottenham Hotspur boss has steadied what appeared to be a very rocky ship at the Stadio Olimpico – but there remains some serious uncertainty as they drift away from the top four.

I Giallorossi have managed just one win in their last four Serie A matches with a general lack of fluency going forward, which is commonly associated with a Jose Mourinho team, especially in the last decade or so. Despite their attacking frustrations, only two teams have scored more than them so far this season.

ATALANTA

Once upon a time, Atalanta were one of the most entertaining and fluid teams to watch in European football but now, in another transitional year, they are attempting to fight their way back into the top four with a more pragmatic approach, still under the management of former Internazionale boss, Gian Piero Gasperini.

The Bergamasci come into this one on the back of a comfortable 3-1 defeat of Sassuolo in their most recent outing in midweek in the Round of 16 of the Coppa Italia. Atalanta have now managed five victories in their last six matches across all competitions as they compete with Bologna, Fiorentina, Roma, Napoli and Lazio for a top four spot.

ATALANTA

Ademola Lookman will be missing from the trip to the capital due to a suspension, whilst Dutch wing-back, Hans Hateboer, is out injured.

PREDICTED XI (3-4-1-2): Carnesecchi; de Roon, Djimsiti, Kolasinac; Zappacosta, Pasalic, Ederson, Ruggeri; Koopmeiners; Scamacca, Muriel

THE PREDICTION

This one has potential to be a genuinely entertaining game – but also the complete opposite. The inconsistency of these two teams is not just shown in their results but in their style of football with Roma capable of racking up seven against some teams but then failing to muster a shot against others. The likelihood is a game in which the two cancel each other out, seeing a stale, low-scoring draw as the lesser of two evils.
