THE LOWDOWN
NAPOLI
It has been a miserable campaign for defending champions Napoli as the Neapolitans do battle to try and stay in the top seven and the European spots, let alone a title challenge or top four push. Under the management of Walter Mazzarri, Napoli have now suffered four defeats in their last five matches across all competitions.
The home team come into this on the back of a 2-0 defeat to Roma last weekend, with both Matteo Politano and Victor Osimhen being sent off. That loss followed a 4-0 hammering at home to Frosinone in the Coppa Italia and the pressure is already growing on Mazzarri after he was appointed during the November international break.
MONZA
The ambitious Monza come into this one on the back of some indifferent and fairly underwhelming form, albeit against tough opposition. The visitors were beaten 1-0 at home by Fiorentina in their most recent outing, last weekend, and have now suffered three defeats in their last four matches in Serie A.
Monza now begin the 18th match day of the 2023/24 Serie A campaign sitting in the bottom-half of the table with five victories, six draws and six defeats in their 17 games so far this season. They are one of the lowest scorers in the division with just 16 goals scored – only five teams have scored fewer than that.
THE TEAM NEWS
NAPOLI
Napoli will be without suspended attacking duo Victor Osimhen and Matteo Politano, whilst both Natan and Mathias Olivera are out injured.
PREDICTED XI (4-3-3): Meret; Di Lorenzo, Rrahmani, Juan, Rui; Anguissa, Lobotka, Zielinski; Raspadori, Simeone, Kvaratskhelia
UNAVAILABLE: Osimhen (Suspended), Politano (Suspended), Natan (Injured), Olivera (Injured)
QUESTIONABLE:
MONZA
Monza are also without suspended duo Papu Gomez and Pablo Mari, whilst defender Gianluca Caprari is a doubt for this weekend.
PREDICTED XI (3-5-2): Di Gregorio; Pereira, D’Ambrosio, Izzo, Caldirola, Kyriakopoulos; Gagliardini, Pessina, Akpa-Akpro; Colpani, Mota
UNAVAILABLE: Gomez (Suspended), Pablo Mari (Suspended)
QUESTIONABLE: Caprari (Injured)
THE PREDICTION
Backing Napoli at any stage this season has been a bit risky with only a couple of genuinely convincing performances and victories from earlier on in the campaign before the still correct departure of Rudi Garcia. The hosts are welcoming a Monza side, though, that have struggled to put up much resistance against the so-called ‘bigger’ or ‘better’ sides in Serie A. As a result, a low-scoring home win would appear a good bet for this one on Friday evening.
TIP: NAPOLI TO WIN & UNDER 3.5 GOALS
