MONZA PREVIEW: FINDING THEIR FEET

Over the summer, Raffaele Palladino departed an ambitious Monza club and he was replaced by AC Milan legend Alessandro Nesta, who was last seen being generally underwhelming in charge of Reggiana in Serie B. They then started the season very slowly and very defensively in their opening couple of months of the campaign.

They started the season without a victory in their opening seven matches of the 2024/25 Serie A campaign before a much-needed and impressive performance and result last weekend as they defeated Hellas Verona by three goals to nil at the Bentegodi with a brace from Dany Mota as well as a strike from Antonio Bianco.

VENEZIA PREVIEW: STRUGGLE AT THE START

Following their promotion to the top-flight of Italian football last season, Venezia lost manager Paolo Vanoli to Torino and he was replaced by former Frosinone and Roma boss Eusebio Di Francesco with the visitors trying to implement a more attacking and entertaining style of football.

However, that style can often be quite naïve and it did see Di Francesco relegate Frosinone from Serie A last season. They begin this weekend’s round of fixtures sitting rock-bottom in Serie A with just one victory in their opening eight matches and they come into this one on the back of a 2-0 defeat at home to Atalanta at the Pier Luigi Penzo Stadium.

MONZA TEAM NEWS: SEVERAL ABSENTEES

Monza have several absentees for this weekend’s visit off Venezia with both Stefano Sensi and young star Daniel Maldini unavailable due to injury for the hosts.

As well as those two injury issues, Papu Gomez remains suspended due to a doping ban with the likes of Alessio Cragno and Samuele Birindelli doubtful for this one.

PREDICTED XI (3-4-2-1): Turati; Izzo, Pablo Mari, Carboni; Pedro Pereira, Pessina, Bondo, Kyriakopoulos; Dany Mota, Caprari; Djuric

UNAVAILABLE: Sensi (Injured), Maldini (Injured), Papu Gomez (Suspended)

QUESTIONABLE: Cragno (Injured), Birindelli (Injured), Petagna (Illness)

VENEZIA TEAM NEWS: LIKELY TO BE UNCHANGED

Venezia have no fresh injury concerns or suspension issues for this weekend’s clash with Monza so they will be able to name an unchanged eleven for this one.

The visitors do have a minor injury concern for their clash with Monza as Birkir Bjarnason is a doubt. Di Francesco will likely want to be unchanged to develop some understanding.

PREDICTED XI (3-4-2-1): Stankovic; Candela, Svoboda, Idzes; Richie Sagrado, Duncan, Caviglia, Zampano; Oristanio, Ellertsson; Pohjanpalo

UNAVAILABLE:

QUESTIONABLE: Bjarkason (Injured)

MONZA VS VENEZIA PREDICTION

Alessandro Nesta, not necessarily just because he used to be a centre-back but mainly because of Monza’s early season results and performances, appears to be a defence-oriented coach but their big win last weekend has given them some relief. They now face a Venezia side that are already in what appears to be a genuinely perilous position and Monza to make it back-to-back victories, especially with their home advantage, would seem like a good value bet.
