THE LOWDOWN

LECCE

After gaining promotion to the top-flight in 2022, Lecce comfortably survived in Serie A, finishing in mid-table. Over the summer, though, they lost their manager, Marco Baroni, to Hellas Verona and replaced him with the proactive coaching of former Benevento boss Roberto D’Aversa with a little pre-season uncertainty.

They have, though, been impressive at the start of this season with no defeats in their opening five matches. However, they come into this on the back of a 4-0 hammering at the hands of defending champions Napoli, making it back-to-back losses for the southerners. They have slipped down the table but remain inside the top seven and European places at the moment.

SASSUOLO

Alessio Dionisi replaced Roberto De Zerbi in the summer of 2021 after De Zerbi left for Shakhtar Donetsk, following Dionisi leading Empoli to Serie B promotion a couple of seasons ago. They have since underperformed and spent time finishing in mid-table in Serie A and, once again, they have been inconsistent at the start of this campaign.

They have managed three victories and four defeats so far this season as they begin this weekend’s round of fixtures sitting in the bottom-half of the table. They started really badly but they managed two impressive victories in the space of a few days against Juventus and Internazionale. Since then, though, they were beaten 1-0 at home by Monza in their most recent outing, last weekend.

THE TEAM NEWS

SASSUOLO

Alessio Dionisi doesn’t have any fresh injury concerns or suspension issues with Agustin Alvarez the only absentee after an ACL injury he suffered a couple of months ago.

PREDICTED XI (4-2-3-1): Consigli; Toljan, Erlic, Tressoldi, Vina; Boloca, Henrique; Berardi, Thorstvedt, Lauriente; Pinamonti

UNAVAILABLE: Alvarez (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE:

THE PREDICTION

These are two sides coached by proactive managers that are looking upwards, albeit with genuine concerns and reservations for both. Lecce are overperforming this season, even with their recent defeats, whilst Sassuolo have underperformed for a couple of years and then suddenly came alive before faltering, once again, at home to Monza last weekend. It could well be an entertaining encounter in which both teams scoring seems likely, regardless of the end match result.

TIP: BOTH TEAMS TO SCORE
