THE LOWDOWN

LECCE

Following promotion to the top-flight in 2022, Lecce comfortably survived and finished in mid-table last season, under the management of Marco Baroni. They played an entertaining and enterprising style of football, too, which has led their possible relegation rivals Hellas Verona managing to persuade him away and to them.

Under the new management of former Benevento coach Roberto D’Aversa, a disciple of Roberto De Zerbi, Lecce have started the season with two victories and two defeats in their opening four matches as they remain unbeaten and sitting in the top four and the UEFA Champions League spots ahead of this weekend’s round of fixtures.

GENOA

Genoa were surprisingly relegated in 2022, under the ownership of Everton’s new majority shareholders 777 Partners. They had Alexander Blessin in charge but he left for Royale Union Saint-Gilloise in the Belgian Jupiler Pro League but he left and was replaced by former Italy striker Alberto Gilardino and he eventually led them to promotion.

After an impressive summer transfer window which involved the signing of Mateo Retegui, the visitors have started the 2023/24 Serie A campaign with just one win in their opening four matches. That one win was an impressive one away to Lazio and they also come into this on the back of a 2-2 draw with reigning champions Napoli.

THE TEAM NEWS

LECCE

The home team will remain with Federico Baschirotto due to suspension, as well as suffering an injury to Kevin Dermaku so those two players will be unavailable.

PREDICTED XI (4-3-3): Falcone; Gendrey, Pongracic, Venuti; Gallo; Kaba, Ramadani, Rafia; Almqvist, Krstovic, Banda

UNAVAILABLE: Baschirotto (Suspended), Dermaku (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE:

GENOA

Alberto Gilardino has pretty much a fully fit and available squad for this weekend and Genoa will be able to name an unchanged eleven for this weekend’s trip to Lecce.

PREDICTED XI (4-4-2): Martinez; De Winter, Bani, Dragusin, Caricol; Sabelli, Strootman, Badelj, Frendrup; Retegui, Gudmundsson

UNAVAILABLE: Vogliacco (Injured)

THE PREDICTION

This one could be quite an entertaining, albeit low key given the teams involved, encounter on Friday evening. Lecce have been inconsistent at the start of this season but will be confident of having more than enough to replicate comfortable survival, once again. Genoa have suffered two defeats this season but collecting four points from games against last’s season top two has proven that they could well be a top-half challenger this season. What is likely is a fun game and over 2.5 goals seems probable.

TIP: OVER 2.5 GOALS
